Simultaneously he practiced bodybuilding, and in 1966 was fourth in the Mr. Europa competition. Two years later he won his first title, when he was named Mr. Universe – Most Muscular competitor, and in 1969 became IFBB Mr. Europe. The same year Franco also won NBAA NBAA Mr. Universe in Most Muscular category and Mr. Universe in Short. He won several more titles in Mr. Universe competitions, and then in 1976 won his first Mr. Olympia title, and after several years of inactivity, he won the title again in 1981, then decided to retire.
