He hasn’t talked about his educational background, but some sources have claimed that he attended a high school in Frosinone.

Career Beginnings

Interested in music from an early age, Ethan started playing drums on his own when he was still a child, his interest in music only increasing as he grew older. At 16 years old, he stumbled upon a Facebook post by Damiano David and his friends, seeking a drummer.

Damiano, Victoria De Angelis and Thomas Raggi attended the same Monteverde high school, and once Ethan responded to the Facebook post, he was selected as the drummer of their newly formed band.

They still didn’t have a name at the time – Ethan and other members started thinking about a name for the band, and when they asked Victoria who is half Danish to say some Danish words that would resound with them, they all agreed on Maneskin, which in the Danish language means moonlight.

The Maneskin members signed up for the Pulse Contest for which they had to have their own song; they eventually won the competition, and went on to perform at the Felt Music Club & School, which had over 200 people in attendance.

They won first prize at their official debut performance, then performed in the streets of Rome’s Colli Portuensi district, and the historical center of Rome, including in Via del Corso.

As their popularity increased they started performing in other cities, such as Faenza at the 2016 Meeting of Independent Record Labels. Just 30 people were in attendance, but they were still rather satisfied with how they performed, and after a trip to Denmark where they also played at a few clubs, they started taking music more seriously.

In 2017 the band was one of the X Factor finalists under the mentorship of Manuel Agnelli, finishing second behind Lorenzo Lictira. On their journey to the finals, Ethan and the rest performed such rock hits as “Beggin’”, by the Four Seasons, then “Somebody Told Me”, performed by the Killers, and Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out”, among several other songs.

They even performed their original song “Chosen”, which was eventually released as a single on 24 November 2017 through Sony Music. The song peaked at No. 2 on the Italian FIMI Singles Chart.

Rise to Prominence

After the unexpected success in “X Factor”, they continued making new music, and in mid-December 2017 the band released their debut EP “Chosen”, followed by their first Italian-language single “Moriro da re”, which made them even more popular, and later achieved double-platinum status.

Their official debut studio album “Il Ballo Della Vita” came out on 26 October 2018, topped the Italian charts and the band then embarked on a tour during 2018 and ‘19, performing at 70 sold-out venues in Italy, also in Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, the UK and Switzerland.

San Remo and Eurovision Wins

The band’s next venture was an unexpected win at the San Remo Music Festival with the song “Zitti e Buoni”. Their win was rendered a surprise by many, since the festival doesn’t often praise rock artists. However, as the winners of the festival, they became designated as the Italian representatives at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, held in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Before Eurovision, Maneskin released the second studio album “Teatro D’ira: Vol. 1”, which topped the Italian chart, and achieved triple platinum status.

Subsequently, Ethan and Maneskin were crowned winners of the Eurovision Song Contest, thus becoming Italy’s third winners of the prestigious music event, and the first band to win the Eurovision since Lordi and their “Hard Rock Hallelujah” eponymous performance in 2006.

A day after Eurovision, Maneskin were world stars. Their songs started charting in countries all over the world, and not just the Eurovision winning song, but including “I Wanna Be Your Slave”, “Coraline”, among others.

They toured Europe extensively, performing at such open-air summer music festivals as Rock for People and Nova Rock Festival, while they also set foot on US soil, making a televised debut on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”, during which they performed “Beggin’”, and also performed live on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”.

Ethan and others also played at the American Music Awards ceremony, and at the MTV Europe Music Awards during which they were presented with the Best Rock act award.

To speak further of his success with Maneskin, he played drums at a sold-out London concert at the O2 Academy Islington, then sold-out US concerts at the Roxy Theatre and Bowery Ballroom, and opened for the Rolling Stones at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium.
