Dustin Brown is the son of a Jamaican father and German mother, and in 1996 they emigrated to Jamaica, to Montego Bay. Brown, who had already decided to play tennis instead of football or handball, was dissatisfied with the conditions in Jamaica, and his parents agreed to return to Germany. They gave him a Volkswagen campervan, so Dustin could travel across Europe and play in the tournaments.

He turned pro in 2002, and a year later won his first double ITF tournament in partnership with Ryan Russell after they beat Clement Morel and Gilles Simon in Montego Bay. Following this title, Dustin has recorded another 15 ITF double titles. In July 2007, he won his first singles ITF title in Romerberg, Germany against Ruben Bemelmans in straight sets.
