Career Beginnings
Giada launched her career in 1995, as she began making video art and documentaries on contemporary art; she was a part of the art project VOLUME from 1997 to 2000. During this time, she made a series of video portraits of several contemporary artists, which included Alfredo Pirri, Bernard Rudiger, Jannis Kounellis, Nunzio, Gianni Dessi, Sol Lewitt, and Raimund Kummer.

Two years later, Giada directed her full-length debut film, “Open My Heart”; she wrote and starred in the film, which follows Maria and her younger sister Catarina who have both had a tragic childhood that follows into adulthood. The film co-starred Natalie Cristiani and Claudio Botosso, and it won Giada Prix de l’Avenir at Paris International Cinema Meeting.
Rise to Prominence
Her early success with “Open My Heart” opened many doors for the young Italian director. Her second feature, “Before It Had a Name” came out in 2005; having collaborated with her husband, Willem Dafoe, on this one, who also starred in the film alongside Giada and Seymour Cassel. The film follows a young Italian girl who inherits a house in the New York countryside from her lover, and when she goes to see the house for the first time, meets the caretaker of the house. The film was shown at several prestigious international film festivals, including Venice and San Sebastian, among others.
Five years later, Giada’s next full-length project was released, “A Woman”, which again starred Dafoe, alongside Jess Weixler and Stefania Rocca, about a romance between a young woman and a famous novelist, and the troubles they have once her obsession with the memory of his dead wife takes over.
Her next project was the short film “The Woman Dress” in 2012, starring Maya Sansa, Annie Hart, and Erika Spring Forster, and the same year, she directed the documentary biopic about Marina Abramovich, entitled “Bob Wilson’s Life & Death of Marina Abramovic”, starring Marina herself, Robin Wilson and Willem Dafoe.
Her collaboration with Marina Abramovic continued the following year, when she directed the short documentary film “The Abramovic Method”.
To speak further of her accomplishments, Giada co-starred in Wes Andersen’s short comedy-drama film “Castello Cavalcanti”, alongside Jason Schwartzman and Giorgio Zancolla.
Moreover, in 2016 she directed another feature film, “Padre”, about a woman who mourns the death of her father, but is contacted by him from another dimension. The film’s main stars were again Giada and Dafoe, accompanied by Franco Battiato.
Her most recent project was the music video “Massimiliano Cignitti: Buio in sala”, while she’s now working on the thriller film “Tropico”, which is currently in pre-production and will star Morena Baccarin, Pedro Pascal and Willem Dafoe.
