She’s rated one of the best female R&B singers in history, and has won numerous awards, including seven Grammys, seven American Music Awards, and nine Billboard Music Awards.
Toni was raised in Severn alongside her younger brother and four younger sisters, by their mother Evelyn Jackson who was a cosmetologist and an opera singer, and their father Michael Conrad Braxton Sr. who was a Methodist clergyman; all of Toni’s sisters have also become singers.
She became interested in music while attending a local high school, however, Toni dreamed of becoming a teacher at that time. The band Mint Condition was formed in either 1980 or 1981, and initially comprised the lead singer and drummer Stokley Williams, the keyboardist Larry Waddell, and the guitarist Homer O’Dell. They were soon joined by three other people, including Keri as their rhythm guitarist and keyboardist, but the boys gained recognition only in June 1991, when their debut album “Meant to be Mint” was released under Perspective Records. Their single “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)” became a minor hit, finding its way onto several US charts; in 1993, the boys released their second album “From The Mint Factory”, which had spawned another hit “U Send Me Swingin”; it reached second place on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart.
