Darin attended Jamestown High School, and played for the school’s football team, hockey team, and ran track too. During this time, he also played American Legion Baseball, before matriculating in 1992. He then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and played baseball there for three years. He held the school record for career hits with 261 and became a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award. He was also a starting punter for the Cornhuskers football team, and was part of the 1994 National Championship team.
Erstad joined the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft, and was selected by the California Angels as the first pick overall. He made his major league debut the next year, and would play his first full season in 1997. He posted solid statistics and earned two All-Star appearances, increasing his net worth significantly. He then had a career season in 2000, finishing eighth in American League MVP voting, after leading the league in numerous statistics, including being the first player in Major League history to record 100 RBIs as a leadoff hitter, which would earn him the AL Silver Slugger Award.
