Darin attended Jamestown High School, and played for the school’s football team, hockey team, and ran track too. During this time, he also played American Legion Baseball, before matriculating in 1992. He then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and played baseball there for three years. He held the school record for career hits with 261 and became a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award. He was also a starting punter for the Cornhuskers football team, and was part of the 1994 National Championship team.

Erstad joined the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft, and was selected by the California Angels as the first pick overall. He made his major league debut the next year, and would play his first full season in 1997. He posted solid statistics and earned two All-Star appearances, increasing his net worth significantly. He then had a career season in 2000, finishing eighth in American League MVP voting, after leading the league in numerous statistics, including being the first player in Major League history to record 100 RBIs as a leadoff hitter, which would earn him the AL Silver Slugger Award. However, in 2001 his performance started to struggle, but he became an important part of the 2002 World Series win for the (now) Anaheim Angels, helping the team win against the New York Yankees. His defense remained strong throughout his career which would lead him to three Golden Glove Awards – he is the only MLB player in history to have won Golden Gloves as an infielder and outfielder. He is also the first player to win the award at different positions. Offensively, in 2005, he compiled a 21 game hit streak.

Darin then signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox which increased his net worth further; he made his first appearance with the team in 2007, then afterwards, he played two seasons with the Houston Astros finding success during his first season, but in 2010, he announced his retirement.

After retiring, Erstad accepted a position to become a volunteer coach for the Nebraska baseball team, and would then become the head baseball coach the following year.

For his personal life, it is known that Darin is married to Jessica and they have three children. During his time with the Angels, his hometown carried Angels games over the radio.
