Dagen attended Wake Forest University and studied Art History, but after graduating, she pursued a career in financial journalism, firstly joining the Institutional Investor’s Newsletter Division, developing her skills and eventually joining Smart Money Magazine as well as their online site SmartMoney.com. Later on, she started her own finance column on TheStreet.com called “Dear Dagen”, on which she answers questions from her audience.

Eventually McDowell started working with FOX, specifically FOX Business Channel. She became the co-host of “Mornings with Maria” which is a news and business program that started airing in 2015, and is also a part of the daily business program “Markets Now”. McDowell is also a regular guest in “Your World with Neil Cavuto” which is one of the longest-running business television programs on Fox News Channel, originally “Cavuto Business Report” at launch. Her net worth increased thanks to these numerous opportunities, and she also joined the radio program “Imus in the Morning” as a business contributor. The show has been airing since 1971 and was part of WNBC and MSNBC. Later on, Fox Business Network would picked it up and McDowell joined the show until the end of the show’s contract.

Dagen has also occasionally appeared on “Outnumbered” which is a news and talk show that features four female panelists and a guest male panelist. She’s also been a weekly panelist for “Cashin’In” and has won the show’s Challenge three times in consecutive years, interestingly defeating other panelists who are professional money managers. A few of her recent projects include being a panelist on “Cavuto On Business”, and the host of “Bulls and Bears” after Brenda Buttner left the show in 2016, a business analysis program which features guests from politics and economics. Thanks to all of these opportunities, her net worth continues to grow.

For her personal life, it is known that McDowell was married in 2002 but the marriage only lasted for 11 months. In 2005, she married Fox News economic analyst Jonas Max Ferris, the two having met on the set of “Cashin’In”. McDowell is a fan of the Washington Redskins and NASCAR Racing. She’s also very active on social media, having at least 78,000 followers on Twitter and over 16,000 followers on Instagram.
