Cloris Leachman was born on 30 April 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa, USA, and is of part-Czech descent. Cloris is an actress, best known for being the star in the film “The Last Picture Show” for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Many also know her for her appearance in various Mel Brooks films. All of her efforts have helped in putting her net worth to where it is today.

Leachman attended Theodore Roosevelt High School and later studied at Illinois State University and then Northwestern University where she majored in drama. She competed in Miss America as Miss Chicago in 1946, and the opportunity led her to get a scholarship which then brought acting opportunities her way. She studied at the Actors Studio and was cast as a replacement for a production of “South Pacific”. She later appeared in the production “Come Back, Little Sheba”. Before that production could reach Broadway however, she left to star in “As You Like It”.

During the 1940 and ’50s, Cloris’ popularity was increasing along with her television appearances. She was featured in several series including “Studio One” and “Suspense”, and meantime had her first film opportunity in “Carnegie Hall” in 1947. Movie work would continue as she continued to make appearances in the following years for films such as “Kiss Me Deadly”, “The Rack”, and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”. Her television appearances would also increase, mostly doing guest appearances in shows such as “Twilight Zone”, “Lassie”, “Checkmate”, and many more. In the 1970s, Leachman partnered with Mel Brooks to work on three of his films which were “Young Frankenstien”, “High Anxiety”, and “The Nutt House”. Her skills became well known after her performance in “The Last Picture Show” which earned her an Oscar.

Along with her eight Primetime awards, she’s also won one Daytime Emmy Award and has been nominated over 20 times throughout her career. One of her most popular roles was as Phyllis Lindstrom in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, which eventually spawned a spinoff, entitled “Phyllis”; Leachman won a Golden Globe Award for her portrayal. She also became a part of “The Muppet Show” and then continued making stage appearances.

Cloris has also voice acted, lending her voice to various animations such as “My Little Pony: The Movie”, “The Iron Giant”, “Castle in the Sky”, and “Gen 13”. For her most recent roles she’s been seen in “The Longest Yard”, “Two and a Half Men”, and even in the seventh season of “Dancing with the Stars” in which she is the oldest person to compete.

Chloris popularity can be gauged from her involvement in almost 80 films, and well over 100 TV productions during a career now spanning almost 70 years.

For her personal life, it is known that Leachman was married to George Englund from 1953 to 1979. They have five children, four of whom are sons. She mentioned in an interview that she was agnostic, before later declaring herself as an atheist. Her granddaughter Anabel Englund is a singer while her sister Claiborne Cary was an actress and singer. Cloris also has an honorary degree from Northwestern University.
