Concerning his college career, Herren played in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Games in 1994. Afterwards, he played one season with the Eagles of Boston College, to be later transferred to the Bulldogs of California State University in Fresno, averaging 15.1 points, 5.4 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game. In 1998, he was inducted into the best quintet of Western Athletic conference, and the following year was the best passer of the conference, averaging 7.2 assists per game.
