While there, Charles went to the American School of Paris, and after matriculation in 1974, he enrolled at the prestigious University of California, Berkeley, where he studied international law. However, he dropped out of studies after an argument with his professor, and on advice from a friend tried himself as an actor. Soon he earned an apprenticeship at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, then a few years later he moved to London, and attended the Drama Studio London. While there, he not only improved as an actor, but also learned new talents, including accents and dialects, which only helped him in his later career.
