Cameron and his older brother Tristan were raised in Tampa Bay by their mother Cheryl Herrin who once worked at State Farm Insurance as a corporate executive and is today retired, and father Chris Herrin who’s a moviemaker and editor, and prefers to stay away from media.

Cameron studied at Tampa Catholic High School and was quite popular there, due to his attractive looks and wealthy family. He was into a number of activities, as he played both soccer and lacrosse, and appeared in a couple of school plays.

Crash and arrest

Cameron was driving with his brother along Bayshore Boulevard when the accident took place; as Cameron was still too young when the car was purchased, it was thus registered to his mother.

He ran across his high school friend John Barrineau (aged 17) in his gold Nissan Altima while driving, and the two decided to race; it was during the race that Cameron hit Jessica and her daughter at the W Knights Avenue intersection. Jessica was killed on the spot, and it was a day later that her daughter succumbed to her injuries. Although the witnesses stated that Cameron was driving around 60mph (96km/h), the investigation revealed that he was going 102mph (164km/h).

Cameron and John were arrested and charged with reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injuries, street racing and vehicular homicide, while Cameron’s brother Tristan was also arrested, and charged with street racing; Cameron and Tristan were released on bail a day later, while John remained behind bars for 22 days, prior to his family posting bail. John reached a plea deal in December 2020 and was sentenced to six years behind bars, 200 hours of community service and 15 years probation, and his driver’s license was suspended for five years; he also agreed to testify against Cameron.

Cameron’s lawyers believed that it would be unfair if Cameron received a harsher sentence than John, claiming that the two boys were equally responsible, even though John didn’t hit anyone with his car. However, on 8 April 2021, Cameron was sentenced to spend 24 years behind bars, with the judge explaining that Cameron had previously been pulled over by the police on several occasions for excessive speeding; even though his lawyers appealed the sentence, they were only able to have the street racing charge dropped.
