C.J. is the son of Chris Sanders, who was also a wide receiver, who played for the Houston Oilers /Tennessee /Titans from 1995 to 2002. C.J. went to Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, Tennessee, where he played football for three years, before moving with his family to California and transferring to Notre Dame High School, Sherman Oaks for his final year. While at his new school, Sanders had 35 catches which was enough for 562 yards and eight touchdowns. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Notre Dame on a football scholarship, where playing for the Fighting Irish, C.J. has been used as a punt returner and for kick returning. He has had several notable accomplishments during his freshman year, including returning a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown against Stanford.
