Who is Beth Mowins?

Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Mowins was born in Syracuse, New York State USA, on 26 May 1967 – her zodiac sign is Gemini, and she holds American nationality. She’s a sports journalist and play-by-play announcer, while she’s probably known best for the work which she’s done for the American international basic cable sports channel ESPN; Elizabeth has worked for a couple of other popular channels, including Marquee Sports Network and CBS.

Early life and education

Beth was raised in Syracuse alongside her three brothers, by their father Len Mowins and their mother whose name remains undisclosed; Beth hasn’t shared a lot about her parents, as she respects their privacy, but it’s believed that they were both physically highly active, and that her father was a football coach at a local high school.

Beth began playing sports while attending North Syracuse High School, and was mostly into soccer, softball and basketball; she was also interested in a couple of other activities, including dancing and creative writing.

Upon matriculating in 1985, she enrolled at Lafayette College, and was the captain of their basketball team for two years; Beth graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1989, and then continued her education at Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, graduating with a Master’s degree in digital journalism and broadcasting in 1990.

Career as a reporter

Beth launched her career in 1991, when hired to work at WXHC-FM Radio as their news and sports director, moving to Homer, New York State for the job. After three years, Beth was invited to join ESPN, and was initially mostly in charge of covering college football, basketball and volleyball, but also college soccer and softball; she’s since become the network’s lead softball play-by-play announcer, and also covers Women’s College World Series. Beth was inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

In 2011, she and Catherine Reddick Whitehill were teamed up to cover the 2011 FIFA Women’s Soccer World Cup for ESPN.

She attracted a lot of attention in 2017, when American sportswriter Richard Deitsch of “Sports Illustrated” reported that Beth was chosen to serve as a play-by-play announcer on ESPN’s show “Monday Night Football”, covering the National Football League (NFL) game between the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers in September of that year, thus becoming the first woman to call a nationally televised NFL game.

The same year saw her and Jay Feely cover the match-up between the Indianapolis Colts and the Cleveland Browns, thus making Beth the first female play-by-play announcer to cover the NFL, the NBA and college basketball for CBS Sports.

She became a fill-in play-by-play announcer for the professional baseball team the Chicago Cubs in February 2021, and on 8 May that year became the first woman to call a regular season game.

In 2021, Beth covered softball during the (2020) Tokyo Olympics, for NBC Olympics.
