Although born in Spain, as both of his parents were based there in the US Air Force, Bernard was raised largely in Winton, California USA, on Castle Air Force Base. He went to Atwater High School, and it was during his high school years that he became involved with sports, playing football, basketball and also ran track. In his senior year, he scored 16 touchdowns from 1,276 receiving yards out of 53 passes. After high school, he enrolled at Fresno State University, where he continued to play football.
His professional career started in the 2004 NFL Draft, when he was selected as the 78th pick by the Chicago Bears. Bernard started slowly with the Bears, as he was used as their back-up wide receiver and return specialist. Therefore, in the first two seasons, he started only three games and managed to score two touchdowns. However, his status changed in 2006, which became his breakthrough year; he started 14 games and scored 6 touchdowns, while he also had 775 yards. His numbers improved further in 2007, as he had 951 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Thanks to his improving form, the Bears put a franchise tag on Bernard and wanted to offer him a new multi million contract after he became a free agent.
However, he chose to sign with the Minnesota Vikings, which offered him a contract worth $42 million over six years, which increased his net worth to a large degree. He started off successfully at his new team, posting his career-best numbers, with 964 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in his first season. Bernard’s second season at Minnesota was also a success with four touchdowns scored and 618 receiving yards, but in 2010 he had a disastrous season finishing without a single touchdown scored. As a result, he was released by the Vikings on the 24th October 2011. Since then he hasn’t signed with any NFL team, but was inducted into the Fresno County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.
Regarding his personal life, Bernard was in a relationship with TV reality star Draya Michele in 2010. Other aspects of his private life have remained unknown to the media.
Bernard is a well-known philanthropist; he donated several times to the Second Harvest Heartland, a hunger-relief organization based in Minnesota.
