Although he was born in Hartford, Austin grew up in New Hampshire, and went to High Mowing School boarding school, and then Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York. Chick specialized in psychology and literature, having received grants from the King Foundation. Despite his now successful career, Austin spent several years unsure of his interests and future career. He once stated that watching „Kings of the Road“ helped him make a career decision and find a direction in which he would pursue a career. He then graduated from SUNY Purchase Film School in New York, with a degree in cinematography in 1998.

In the early 2000s he wrote and directed his first major film called „XX/XY“ which starred Kathleen Robertson and Mark Ruffalo, and was based on the complex relationship between two college students during their studies and later life, in this way incorporating Chick’s knowledge and experience in psycology with the art of film. „XX/XY“ was presented at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival where it earned a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize, and was later taken up by IFC Films. In 2007 Austin co-produced Sidney Lumet’s movie „Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead“, which starred Philip Seymor Hoffman and Ethan Hawke, and then produced the movie „August“, released in 2008 by ContentFilm International and featuring Adam Scott, Josh Hartnett and David Bowie – Chick also served as the film’s executive producer and director, considerably enhancing his net worth.

Another successful project of his came out in 2012, called „Girls Against Boys“ which Austin wrote and directed, and starred Danielle Panabaker and Nicole LaLiberte. The film was released by Anchor Bay Entertainment, and brought Chick the Grand Jury Prize at the New Hampshire Film Festival, and a nomination for an Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival. His other notable work includes the 2008 short film „Vamonos“ and „Hit So Hard“ documentary from 2011.

When it comes to his personal life there isn’t much information available as Austin tries to keep his privacy away from publicity. However, Chick was married to actress Morena Baccarin with whom he has a son born in 2013; the couple married in 2011 but decided to split up in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.
