Arturo Gatti was born on the 15th April 1972, in Cassino, Italy, and was a professional boxer who fought in the ring from 1991 until 2007, and won the WBC super lightweight title in 2004 in a match against Gianluca Branco, and held the title until 2005 when he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. He passed away in 2009.

Arturo spent the majority of his childhood in Latium in central western Italy, and later moved with his family to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In his teenage years, Gatti settled in Jersey City, New Jersey USA.

In the early 1990s, Arturo was a part of the Canadian National Team, and trained with the team to participate in the 1992 Summer Games, however, he decided to become a professional boxer, and made his debut in June ’91, and had five victories, against such boxers as Jose Gonzales, Francisco Aguiano and Joe Lafontant, among others, before his November ‘92 fight against against King Solomon which he lost. Arturo then traveled to Amsterdam, Netherlands for his next match, defeating Plawen Goutchew in the first round. Since then, his career went largely upwards until his retirement, as did his net worth.

The following year, he fought against Leon Bostic, and Pete Taliaferro, winning both in the first rounds, and with the latter the USBA junior lightweight title. He managed to defend his title on two occasions, defeating Richard Salazar and Jose Sanabria, which only increased his net worth. In 1995 he challenged Tracy Harris Patterson for the IBF Super Featherweight title, and won by judge decision. Upon victory, Arturo signed a contract with the HBO, and started appearing on HBO Boxing. The next year Arturo fought only twice, against Wilson Rodriguez and Feliciano Correa, winning both matches. He retained IBF Junior Title with victories against the defeated champion Tracy Harris Patterson, and Gabriel Ruelas. Unfortunately, he then recorded three consecutive losses, against Angel Manfredy and two against Ivan Robinson. Nevertheless, Arturo returned stronger than ever with the start of the 2000s, and recorded three consecutive victories, which only increased his net worth. In 2004, he won the WBC super lightweight title by defeating Gianluca Branco and retained title until 2005, defeating Leonard Doroftei and Jesse James Leija, but lost it to the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Before his retirement, Arturo also won the IBA welterweight title against Thomas Damgaard, but ended his career with a loss to Alfonso Gomez. Three years after his death, Gatti was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Regarding his personal life, Arturo was married to Amanda Rodrigues from 2007 until his death, with whom he has a son. Arturo was found dead in his apartment in Brazil, on his sister`s wedding day. In the beginning, his wife was charged with first degree murder, but later it was stated that it was suicide. However,, his family and Canadian authorities demanded further explanations, and exhumed the body. In 2011 it was reported that Arturo had died violently, probably suffocated as his neck suffered constriction before death occurred. He passed away on the 11th July 2009 in Ipojuca, Pernambuco, Brazil
