Anish Kapoor was born on the 12th March 1954, in Bombay, India and is a sculptor, best known for creating such works as Cloud Gate, Sky Mirror and Temenos, among many others.

The son of a Hindu father, and a Jewish mother, he went to The Doon School, a boarding school for boys in Dehradun. In the period between 1971 and 1973, Anish traveled to Israel living on a kibbutz with one of his brothers, and then started studying electrical engineering. However, those studies didn’t last long as he found out that mathematics wasn’t his stronger side, and he left studies after six months. During his time in Israel, Anish became interested in artistry, so he then migrated to Britain, where he enrolled at the Hornsey College of Art, and later Chelsea School of Art and Design. While studying, his interest increased further once he became familiar with the works of the renowned sculptor Paul Neagu. After finishing his studies, Anish became a teacher at Wolverhampton Polytechnic in 1979, while three years later he joined the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, as an Artist in Residence.
His earliest works were exhibited at the Hayward Gallery, London in 1978, the “A Thousand Names”. In the early ‘80s, he came to prominence with his geometric and biomorphic sculptures made of simple materials, including limestone, plaster, pigment and granite. It was only in 1987 that he started working with stone, and then from the mid- ‘90s, he has made his sculptures with polished stainless steel. Some of those works include “Taratantara” (1999), a 35-metre-high piece installed in the Baltic Flour Mills in Gateshead, England, then “Marsyas” (2002), which consists of three steel rings that are joined by a single span of PVC membrane. From the mid- 2000s, he started to work with red wax, and in 2007 presented his work “Svayambh”.
He continued to build a reputation for himself, and in 2009 became the first Guest Artistic Director of the Brighton Festival, and the same year achieved another first – a living artist to have a solo exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. Two years later another of his works saw the light of day, “Dirty Corner”, exhibited at the Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan.
Throughout his career, Anish has held numerous exhibitions, starting with the 1980 solo exhibition at Patrice Alexandra, Paris. Ten years later his work was exhibited at the 1990 Venice Biennale, where he represented Britain and won the Premio Duemila Prize.
In 2004 he was a part of the Gwangju Biennale in Korea, and his work has also been exhibited in Brazil, Spain, Germany, France and other countries.
Thanks to his successful career, Anish has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Turner Prize in 1991, Praemium Imperiale, and was knighted by The Queen in 2013, having previously been appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2003. Also, in 2012 he received a Padma Bhushan, which is India’s third-highest civilian honor.
Regarding his personal life, Anish has been married to Susanne Spicale a German art historian – since 1995, with whom he has two children.
