Álvaro Morte spent his early years in his hometown of Algeciras, before he moved with his family to Bujalance, Córdoba. He was raised by his parents; however, little is known about them except that his father was an entrepreneur, while his mother was a painter, singer and dancer. He has two elder brothers but their names are unknown. He holds Spanish nationality and belongs to Hispanic ethnic group. He is a Christian. Regarding his education, Álvaro initially worked towards a degree in communications engineering, but eventually transferred to study dramatic art at the Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático y Danza de Córdoba, from which he graduated in 1999.
He then moved to Finland to complete his post-graduate studies at the University of Tampere.
Career Beginnings
Álvaro Morte launched his professional acting career back in 2002 when he made his debut TV appearance in the minor role of Buzo in an episode of the Spanish romantic action-drama series “Hospital Central”, which was broadcast on Telecinco in Spain. During the same year, he made a guest appearance in the Spanish police drama series “Policías, En El Corazón De La Calle” on Atena 3. The following year, he appeared in the short fantasy film “Los Niños Del Jardín”, next to Concha Velasco and Valeria Arribas, and had the part of Alberto in the short horror film “La Guarida Del Ermitaño”, co-written and directed by Jaime Alonso de Linaje.
His next project was the short film “Ignora” in 2006, while his feature film debut came in 2007, when he featured as Rafael Torres in the biopic “Lola, La Película”, which is based on the life of the legendary Spanish flamenco singer and dancer Lola Flores.
Breakthrough
Álvaro Morte landed his breakthrough role when he was chosen to play Ray, the main protagonist in the hit Spanish crime thriller series “Planta 25”, in which he shared the screen with Marco de Paula, Claudia Molina and Dulcinea Juárez, appearing in 64 episodes during the time the series was broadcast from 2007 to 2008. He then guest-starred as Jefe Gasolinera in the 2008 episode “Lleno, Por Favor” of the critically acclaimed Telecinco sitcom “Aída”, which became the most viewed show in Spain at the time.
His next major role came the following year with his portrayal of Pablo in the comedy TV series “¡A Ver Si Llego!”, after which he was cast in the recurring role of Toño in the Spanish prime-time drama TV series “Cuéntame cómo pasó”, from 2009 to 2010. He then starred in the role of Adolfo Castillo in the Spanish historical drama TV series “Bandolera”, next to Marta Hazas and Javier Rey, from 2012 to 2013.

Álvaro Morte’s most prominent role to date that led him to gain recognition all around the globe, came when he booked the role of Sergio Marquina – a.k.a. The Professor – in the highly popular Spanish heist crime drama series “La Casa De Papel”, also known as “Money Heist”, which was created by Álex Pina, and released on Antena 3 and internationally on Netflix from 2017 to 2021.
The series follows two heists led by Morte’s character, one on the Bank of Spain and the other on the Royal Mint of Spain. It received an International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series in 2018, while Alvaro was praised for his performance in the series, and won several awards, including a Platino for Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV series, and an Actors and Actresses Union Award for Best Leading Actor (TV), among others.
Further Work
Concurrently, Álvaro continued to work on other projects, featuring as David Ortiz in the 2018 mystery drama film “Mirage”, which was released on Netflix, and thereafter playing the main role of Óscar in the Spanish drama series “El Embarcadero”, which aired on Movistar+ from 2019 to 2020.
