Peyton Manning was born in New Orleans on 24 March 1976, making his zodiac sign Aries. He spent 18 seasons playing in the National Football League (NFL), 14 of which were with the Indianapolis Colts, and the remaining four with the Denver Broncos; many people consider Peyton to be the best quarterback of all time, and he’s been nicknamed ‘the Sheriff’.

Peyton was raised in New Orleans by his father Elisha Archibald Manning III and mother Olivia (nee Williams); his father was also a quarterback, while Peyton’s brother Elisha Nelson Manning’s also a retired football player, with two Super Bowl wins to his name. Peyton studied at Isidore Newman School, and was on the school’s football team the Greenies; he played three seasons as their starter, winning 34 and losing five games. In 1993, he was named both Columbus Touchdown Club National Offensive Player of the Year, and Gatorade Circle of Champions National Player of the Year.

After he matriculated in 1994, around 60 colleges offered Peyton athletic scholarships, and he chose to enroll at University of Tennessee, and to play football for their Volunteers.

Peyton became his team’s starter during his freshman year, and the following year saw him enter the race for the Heisman Trophy; he was voted into sixth place, and then eighth place in 1996. Peyton graduated in 1998 and was picked by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1998 NFL Draft (first overall pick).

During his first year with the Colts, Peyton set five NFL rookie records, and was named to the NFL All Rookie First Team; in November 1998, he was named American Football Conference (AFC) Offensive Player of the Week, and then again in October 1999, September 2000 and December 2000.

Peyton was named NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the first time in the 2003 season, while he was also named the AFC Offensive Player of the Month (September); he was named MVP again in the 2004 season, as well as the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. In 2005, he won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

Peyton reached his first Super Bowl (XLI) in 2006, when the Colts faced the Chicago Bears, defeating them 29-17; Peyton was named Super Bowl MVP, and won the ESPY Award for Best Championship Performance.

He was named NFL MVP in both 2008 and 2009, while the year 2009 also saw him and the Colts reach Super Bowl XLIV, which they lost to the New Orleans Saints 31-17; this was the first Super Bowl victory for the Saints.

Peyton had to undergo neck and spinal fusion surgery in 2011, and thus missed the entire season; mostly because of this, he was released by the Colts on 7 March 2012.

Many teams wanted Peyton to play for them following his split from the Colts, including the Miami Dolphins, the Denver Broncos and the Tennessee Titans; he signed a $96 million five-year contract with the Broncos on 20 March 2012.

Peyton was named MVP in 2013, and the Broncos went on to reach Super Bowl XLVIII, losing to the Seattle Seahawks 43-8.

On 19 October 2014, he became the all-time NFL leader in passing touchdowns, after having scored his 509th in a game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Peyton and the Broncos faced the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 on 7 February 2016, defeating them 24-10.

He revealed that he was retiring from professional football on 7 March 2016, and was in the same year presented with his ninth ESPY Icon Award (ESPY); he’s since been inducted into the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame, while he was also named to the NFL 100 All-Time Team in 2019.

Peyton’s also an author, having co-written the 2000 book “Manning: A Father, His Sons, and a Football Legacy” together with his father.

Upon retiring from football, Peyton focused on philanthropy, and launched his own charity Peyback Foundation; its aim is to help disadvantaged children.
