His oldenr brother, Vicente Jr. was a victim of a kidnapping in the late ‘90s when he was taken by a organized crime gang, whichs sought a large sum of money from Alejandro’s father, and even cut off one of Vicente Jr’s fingers and sent it to the family as a warning. The sum was eventually paid out and Vicente was freed – Vicente never revealed the exact amount of money that he paid for his son’s release.
Alejandro looked up to his father from an early age, and made his debut appearance on stage when just five years old he. In one of his father’s shows he performed the song “Alejandra” on stage, but in the middle of his rendition forgot the lyrics and began crying, which then led to a panic attack. Luckily, his father was there for him, and they sang together.
Although he suffered a fiasco at his debut appearance, Alejandro continued to feature in his father’s shows, and as he got older, he began making his own music. He studied architecture, but instead of pursuing a career as an architect, Alejandro turned to music with his father’s encouragement.
His first album, “Alejandro Fernandez” came out in December 1992, and spawned such hits as “Necesito Olvidarla”, Brumas”, and “Equivocadamente”.
Following the release of the album, Alejandro launched a Mexican tour, but also performed in some cities in the US. His second album, “Piel de Nina”, came out in April 1993, and created such hits as “Piel De Nina”, “Cascos Ligeros”, and “Acabe Por Llorar”.
He continued to make new music in the first half of the ‘90s, and the next album “Grandes Exitos a la Manera de Alejandro Fernandez” came out in 1994, consisting of pieces by legendary composers, including Armando Manzanero, Agustin Lara and Luis Demetrio, among others.
His fifth album “Que Seas Muy Feliz” (1995) brought him international success, especially the song “Como Quien Pierde Una Estrella”, and the next album “Muy Dentro de Mi Corazon” became an instant success, thanks to the songs “Nube Viajera”, “Abrazame” and “Mono Negro”, which all became hits not only in Mexico, but several other Latin countries too, eventually achieving double-platinum status.
He continued his career rather successfully, with such albums as “Me Estoy Enamorando” (1997), “Mi Verdad” (1999), and “Entre Tus Brazos” (2000), which achieved double platinum status in the US, and the latter became his first No. 1 album on the US Top Latin chart.
Since the start of the 2000s, Alejandro has enjoyed international fame, especially with albums “Origenes”, his second to top the US Latin chart, from which the flamenco-style mariachi bolero song “Tantina Pena” became an international hit, then the ranchero album “Canto De Mexico” (2002), which contains 22 classic ranchera songs. These were followed by “A Corazon Abierto” (2004), which achieved triple platinum status, “Viento a Favor” in 2007, and “Dos Mundos: Evolucion” (2009).
He has since slowed down somewhat, and has since released only three studio albums – “Condifencias” (2013), which is one of his most popular albums as it topped the US Latin and US Latin Pop charts, and achieved four-times platinum status, then “Rompiendo Fronteras” (2017), and his most recent studio album, “Hecho en Mexico” came out on 14 February 2020.
Until the mid- 2000s, Alejandro released his music through Sony Music, but he eventually sued them as the label tried to release an album that contained some of his unreleased songs following the end of his contract with the label. After the lawsuit, the police seized 6,000 copies of the album at Sony’s headquarters – one of the songs was already released, “Diferente”, as the lead single of the album found its way online.
