When his family moved to California, Alan attended Hawthorne High School where he met Brian and Carl Wilson. After matriculating, he went to Ferris State University and then moved to El Carmino College. There he was reunited with Brian, and they then had the idea forming a band. He had originally wanted the Beach Boys to be a folk band, but the group eventually decided to go into rock ‘n’ roll. He was well known for his knowledge of various string instruments and originally played the bass for the band before going on a brief hiatus to pursue dentistry. He eventually returned in 1963, becoming the rhythm guitarist of the band.

Jardine was first heard in the song “Christmas Day” which was a part of the 1964 album “The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album”. This was followed by the song “Help Me, Rhonda” which became a number one hit, and soon he would regularly contribute his vocals to many of their tracks. He also started writing songs which were showcased in their “Friends” and “Holland” albums. He wrote the song “Lady Lynda” for his first wife and then became involved with Carl Wilson in production work, some of the songs included “Cotton Fields” and “Peggy Sue”. They also did a cover of The Mamas and the Papas “California Dreamin” which featured surviving members of The Mamas and Papas. The band produced albums and toured steadily if not often over the next decades, significantly improving Al’s and the others net worth.

After Carl Wilson’s death in 1998, Al would stop touring with the Beach Boys and focused on the Endless Summer Band. He also had an issue with another original Beach Boy Mike Love, as Al had formed another band called “Beach Boys Family & Friends”. In 2008, he released a single entitled “Big Sur California” and would then make his solo album debut two years later called “A Postcard from California”, which featured contributions from members of the Beach Boys as well as other artists. In 2011, he finally reunited with the Beach Boys after more than 10 years for a Ronald Reagan tribute concert. A few months later, the band announced that they would be making a new album and would go on The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Reunion Tour, which was relatively short-lived, deciding to stop touring after September 2012.
Aside from music, Al has also authored a book entitled “Sloop John B: A Pirate’s Tale” which was based on the folk song “Sloop John B”.

For his personal life, Al was married to Lynda Sperry from 1964-82, and they have two sons. He subsequently married Mary Ann Helmandollar in 1983, and they also have two sons.
