Adam attended New Caney High School in Texas, where he played football as a quarterback. After matriculation, the Cincinnati Reds drafted him as the 50th overall pick in the 1998 MLB draft, however, he didn’t play major league baseball until 2001, instead enrollingd at the University of Texas, Austin, where he played as a backup quarterback to Major Applewhite. That didn’t last long, as he focused on baseball in 1999, mostly thanks to the arrival of Chris Simms at the university.

In his first season in the majors, Adam posted a rookie record for the most home runs in a month, with 12 in August. The following season, his numbers further increased and he had a career-high 128 walks and a .400 on-base percentage. Thanks to his improving form, Adam made his first appearance in the All-Star game. Two years later, he had his best season in his professional baseball career, posting the highest numbers in categories including batting average, home runs, runs, hits, OPS and slugging average. This brought him a new contract worth $35 million over four years, which increased his net worth to a large degree. He stayed with the Reds until 2008, when he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Dallas Buck, a right-handed pitcher, and two additional players, catcher Wilkin Castillo, and pitcher Micah Owings.

Unfortunately, his numbers fell drastically, and after his contract expired in 2009, he changed his environment, signing a contract with the Washington Nationals worth $20 million over two years. His numbers began to improve, and he then changed position to first baseman, continuing to play in position until his retirement. After his contract with the Nationals expired, Adam signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox worth $56 million over four years, further increasing his wealth. He had a great start with his new team, but an appendectomy stopped his great form, and after the return, he just wasn’t the same. He stayed in Chicago until 2014, when the White Sox traded him to the Oakland Athletics.

Unfortunately, his ill form continued, and after only 25 games as an Athletic, Adam decided to retire from baseball. He finished his career with a .237 batting average, 462 home runs and 1,168 runs batted in.
Adam also played baseball on the international level; back in 2009, he was a part of the US team for the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

Regarding his personal life, Adam has been married to Rachel Brown since 2006; the couple has three children together.
