Betty Gabriel was born on 6 January 1981 in Washington, D.C., USA, the older daughter of Hanson Gabriel, a businessman, and Benedicta Gabriel, a housewife; her younger sister is named Tamina. Although born in Washington, Betty spent the majority of her childhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Hyattsville, Maryland, where she finished high school.

Betty then enrolled at Iowa State University, from which she obtained a Bachelor of Science in animal science. While at the university, she became interested in acting, and joined its theater club.
