Xochitl Gomez is an American film and television actress, perhaps most popular for her role in the film by Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” as America Chavez, along with one of the main roles in the Netflix original, “The Baby-Sitters Club” as Dawn Schafer.

Early Life and Educational Background

Xochitl Gomez-Deines was born on the 29th April 2006 in Los Angeles, California, USA, the only child of Monty Hall, a Mexican native, and Valéria Gyenge, a Los Angeles native. The family of three lived in Hollywood ‘til she was five years old, when they moved to Echo Park.

It was at that age that Xochitl was first introduced to theater; her mother enrolled her into a musical theatre class. Her subsequent interest in theatre led her to perform in 22 full length musicals by the time she turned 12 years old. She recalled, ‘… As a theatre kid, if I wasn’t in a show I was just coming off one, or prepping an audition for the next one… I loved being on stage performing and bonding with the cast, and all the excitement leading up to the show’.

After years of performing on stage, Xochitl ventured into acting before the camera. At 10 years old, she started appearing in commercials that eventually got her noticed. She spent her afternoons doing auditions for roles on TV, sometimes doing about five auditions a day. Xochitl cites her mother as being most supportive of her interest in acting, saying ‘My mom would drive me around L.A. for hours every day after school, taking me to auditions’. As the aspiring actress got busier, her mother gave up her job to be able to manage her better.

Growing up in Echo Park, Xochitl was heavily influenced by Mexican culture, as most of the people around her were Mexican, including her friends and babysitter. Her parents spoke Spanish at home, so she was bilingual from an early age. Concerning her educational background, the young actress attended a local public school, where she continued to pursue her interest in acting, and starred in 13 short student films, in which she gained experience. She said, ‘… I look back at the short films I did and I’m really proud of them. I feel that got me to where I am now…’.

She carried on with her daily auditions that were cutting into her school hours, something her school didn’t allow. As a result of her busy schedule, Xochitl was forced to discontinue her public schooling, and adopt independent study. Fortunately for her, the move was a favorable one; she did most of her classes during the summer break and could move ahead. She can now spend most of her time focusing on and pursuing her professional acting career.

Career

After years of attending daily auditions, Xochitl was finally noticed. She appeared in a number of commercials before she made her television debut – a small recurring role in 2018, in Disney Channel’s “Raven’s Home”. The following year she made her big screen debut as Chucky in “Shadow Wolves”; her performance was well received by critics, and she even won an award for it. That same year she had a small role as Eclipse Kid in the series “You’re the Worst”, followed by a role of Young Ana in the series, “Gentefied”. She earned her most popular role in 2020, as one of the main characters – Dawn Schafer- in the Netflix series, “The Baby-Sitters Club”, appearing in seven first season episodes.

During the COVID pandemic she had no acting commitments, but auditioned for a role in a then-secret Marvel project. After six months, she was contacted by the producers who were very impressed with her performance in the audition tape. She had a screen test in England, and was contacted two days later. She recalls sitting on her bedroom floor along with her mom and agent, who asked her to log onto an incoming video call on Zoom, but wouldn’t give her more details. Curious, she logged on to find Sarah Finn on screen, who is the Marvel Studios casting director, who gave her the news of her casting. Xochitl remembers, ‘… and she was like,’ Hey Xochitl, are you sitting down? Because I have some big news for you.’ I was like,’ Yeah.’ She said,’ Welcome to the MCU. You’re America Chavez’. ‘. She recalls being frozen in disbelief at the news, and that it took a few weeks for it to settle in.

In October, she was officially announced as America Chavez in the much awaited “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”; the role was adjusted to fit the then-14 year-old Xochitl to become Marvel’s first Latina, queer superheroine; filming proceeded alongside MCU veterans Elizabeth Olsen and Benedict Cumberbatch. Its release in 2022 saw the movie largely successful at the box office, earning about $700 million in its first two weeks, as well as in critic’s views. Her performance was praised, and cemented her in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years to come. Currently, Xochitl is represented by the agencies HYPERION Talent and The Savage Agency.
