Willie D is a son of Alfred Deboest, a carpenter and construction worker, and Marvelous Dennis, a cafeteria cook. His parents divorced when he was four, and Willie stayed to live with four siblings and his mother, who was verbally and physically abusive. Willie D wanted to be a boxer, and started boxing at the age of 11, and won the Golden Gloves Champion for the State of Texas in 1985. He went to Forest Brook High School but never graduated after being expelled for fighting two months before graduation in 1986.

Willie D joined the Houston rap group called Geto Boys in 1988, and together with Bushwick Bill and Scarface, they revamped the group that was formed in 1986; they were the pioneers of horrorcore, famous for their lyrics about psychotic experiences, necrophilia, and misogyny. In 1989, Geto Boys released their gold-certified “Grip It!
