Career

Mordechai improved steadily with age, and during the ‘70s was a standard player for the Maccabi Jaffa team. In the 1976-1977 season, he led the team to the runner-up position in the Israeli Premier League, which success provided them with a spot in the now discontinued UEFA Intertoto Cup in the 1977 season, placed in the group alongside Halmstad from Sweden, Vojvodina from Serbia, and Ajax Amsterdam from the Netherlands.

They managed two wins, one drawn match, and three losses, but sadly ended last in the group due to the worst goal difference of -6 – The winner of their group was Halmstad.

After several successful seasons with Maccabi Jaffa, Mordechai was recruited by Maccabee Los Angeles, a semi-professional team competing in the Greater Los Angeles Soccer League, and the CONCACAF Champions League.

The club was formed by Israeli expatriates as a recreational Sunday soccer team, however, their aspirations increased over time, and they went on to win Lamar Hunt US Open Cup five times, and were crowned league winners seven times.

After a couple of seasons with the American soccer club, he returned to Israel and rejoined his former team, but retired from professional football in 1980 and moved permanently to the US.
