Anthony Charles Edwards was born in Santa Barbara, California USA, on 19 July 1962 – his zodiac sign is Cancer, and he holds American nationality. He’s an actor, film producer and director, who has appeared in more than 50 movies and TV series, while he’s perhaps still known best for his portrayal of the lead character Mark Greene, in the popular romantic series “ER”. It was created by Michael Crichton, also starred George Clooney and Julianna Margulies, and follows the lives of the staff of Chicago’s County General Hospital; the series aired from 1994 to 2009, and won 179 awards, including 23 Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 370 other awards.

Early life, family and education
Anthony was raised in Santa Barbara alongside his four siblings, by his father Peter Edwards who was an architect, and his mother Erika Kem Edwards Plack (nee Weber) who was an artist.
He grew up being interested in acting, and started appearing in plays performed at a community theatre when he was still attending elementary school. Anthony was only 11 years old when he made his debut film appearance, in the 1973 action crime adventure “Big Zapper”, but he then focused on his education, and eight years would pass before he continued his career.
Upon matriculating from San Marcos High School in 1980, Anthony was offered a scholarship by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (London, England), but he chose to stay in the US, and enrolled at University of Southern California, but dropped out after only a year, and began making a name for himself in the film industry.
Roles in movies
In 1981, Anthony played Tommy Lee Swanson in the drama “The Killing of Randy Webster”, and a couple of his following roles were in the 1982 comedy drama “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”, the 1983 biographical romantic drama “Heart Like a Wheel” and later that year in the comedy “High School USA.”
The ‘80s saw Anthony appear in many hit movies, while the most popular amongst these was probably the 1986 action drama “Top Gun”, directed by Tony Scott, and which starred Tom Cruise, Tim Robbins and Kelly McGillis. It follows several men who are attending the US Navy’s Elite Fighter Weapons School – Top Gun – and the movie won 12 awards, including an Oscar for Best Music, Original Song, while it was nominated for five other awards.
Anthony appeared in three movies in 1990: the action crime comedy “Downtown”, the western comedy “El Diablo”, and the comedy drama “Hometown Boy Makes Good”.
In 1994, he portrayed Clint Von Hooser in the mystery crime drama “The Client”, directed by Joel Schumacher, and which starred Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones and Brad Renfro. It follows a boy who watched a mafia lawyer commit suicide, while the District Attorney is now trying to use the boy to take down a mafia boss; the film won three of the eight awards for which it was nominated, including an Oscar nomination. Anthony also appeared in the popular ‘90s movies “Playing by Heart” and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”.
In 2007, he was cast to play Inspector William Armstrong in the critically acclaimed mystery crime drama “Zodiac”, directed by David Fincher, and which starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr.
It follows a cartoonist who has become a detective, and is trying to catch the serial killer Zodiac; the movie won four of the 76 awards for which it was nominated.
A couple of Anthony’s following notable roles were in the 2009 comedy drama “Motherhood”, the 2010 romantic comedy drama “Flipped”, and the 2013 romantic drama “Big Sur”. Most recently, in 2017 he portrayed Darwin Conn in the not-so-popular thriller drama “Controversy”.

Anthony made his debut TV series appearance with his portrayal of Robbie in the 1981 episode “The Fire Within” of the action crime drama “Walking Tall”, then in 1982 and 1983, he starred as Andy Quinn in the comedy “It Takes Two”.

It was created by Susan Harris, also starred Richard Crenna and Patty Duke, and follows Dr. Sam and the lawyer Molly Quinn, who are too busy with their careers to pay attention to their children; the series was nominated for three awards, including a Primetime Emmy. The ‘80s also saw Anthony appear in an episode of the dramas “For Love and Honor” and “Call to Glory”.
In 1992 and 1993, he played Mike Monroe in the comedy drama “Northern Exposure” – his only other TV series role in the ‘90s was his portrayal of Dick Hickock, in the 1996 historical crime mini-series “In Cold Blood”.
Anthony appeared in only two series in the 2000s: the 2001 episode “… And Then Jack Forgot His Dream” of the comedy “The Weber Show”, and the 2001 episode “The Return of Martin Crane” of the comedy “Frasier”.
The year 2013 saw him star as Hank Galliston in the fantasy thriller drama “Zero Hour”, created by Paul T. Scheuring, and which also starred Carmen Ejogo and Scott Michael Foster. It follows the life of a man who’s working as a sceptic magazine’s editor.
Three of Anthony’s most recent roles in TV series have been in the 2016 episode “Landmarks” of the historical comedy “Drunk History”, six episodes of the 2017 mystery crime mini-series “Law & Order True Crime”, and 10 episodes of the 2019 action mystery drama “Designated Survivor”.
Other credits
Anthony has three directing credits: the 1995 movie “Charlie’s Ghost Story”, four episodes of the series “ER” (1996-2001), and the 2016 movie “My Dead Boyfriend”.

He won a 1998 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama, for “ER”, and he was nominated for the same award in 1996, 1997 and 1999.
Anthony won a 2010 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Made for Television Movie, for his and his colleagues’ production of the movie “Temple Grandin”, and has been nominated for four other Emmys, all for his performance in the series “ER”.
Love life and wife
In 1986 and 1987, Anthony was in a relationship with the famous American actress, film producer and director Meg Ryan.
He married Jeanine Lobell on 5 September 1994, in a private ceremony attended by only the closest of their friends and family members; Jeanine is an American make-up artist, who’s probably still known best for having worked on the 2000 movie “Charlie’s Angels”.
On 1 June 1994, Jeanine gave birth to their son Bailey, and their twin daughters Wallis and Esme followed on 1 September 2000; on 15 March 2002, Jeanine gave birth to their third daughter Poppy, however, Anthony and Jeanine divorced in 2015.
He then started dating the famous American actress and singer-songwriter Mary Megan Winningham, whom he had met 35 years earlier. As of January 2022, Anthony’s in a relationship with Mary Winningham, was once married to Jeanine Lobell, and has four children with Jeanine.
Hobbies and interesting facts
Anthony is a lover of animals, and his favorites are cats; he has a pet cat called Nitro.
He’s interested in cars, and his first was a Honda Civic.

Anthony’s passionate about travelling, and has been to nearly all of the US states, as well as to various European, Asian and African countries, for both work and pleasure. His dream travel destination is Miami in Florida.
Anthony has his own favorite actors and actresses, some of whom are Tom Hanks, the late Robin Williams and Helena Bonham Carter, while a couple of his favorite films include “Catch Me If You Can”, “Good Will Hunting” and “Fight Club”.

Anthony published an essay on the online platform Medium on 10 November 2017, about the American film producer and director Gary Goddard; Anthony states that Gary sexually assaulted him and his friends for the first time in 1974 (when Anthony was 12), and that it continued for the following a couple of years.
