Who is Tien Tran?

American actress, comedienne and screenwriter Hanh Tien Tran was born under the zodiac sign Aries on 30 June 1987, in Chester, Pennsylvania USA. She has 15 acting credits, and is perhaps known best for playing Jane Ji in the 2021 horror thriller movie “Candyman”, written and directed by Nia DaCosta, and which starred Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Teyonah Parris and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. A sequel to the 1992 eponymous movie, the film follows a man killing people in a Chicago neighborhood; it won 10 of its 34 award nominations.

Tien’s today highly active in the movie industry, and is currently working on multiple upcoming projects.

Education and early life

Tien was raised in Erie, Pennsylvania by her Vietnamese parents, about whom she doesn’t talk in public as she respects their privacy, however, as they’re very close, she still sometimes features them in her Instagram content. Tien seems to be an only child as she hasn’t talked about having siblings.

She attended a local high school in Erie and was into various activities during her time there as she played soccer for the school team, appeared in nearly all the plays performed at the school and took guitar lessons; it was also while at high school that she fell in love with acting, and chose to pursue it as a career.

Tien matriculated in 2005, and then continued her education at Boston College, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in biology in 2009; she was a member of a comedy troupe during her time at college.

Tien’s debut film role was playing Mother-Café in the 2011 short family movie “John Doe”, directed by Shawnette Heard, and which starred Tristan James Butler, Marcus Brock and David Belensky; it follows a successful young woman who has to take care of her dysfunctional sister.

In 2020, Tien played a supporting character in the comedy “Asner’, directed by Dave Yakir and Scott Goldstein, and which starred Ryan Asher, Katie Kershaw and E. R. Figtmaster; it follows three friends who enjoy being high, searching for true love and having brunch.

Tien’s only other movie role has been playing the main character Sarah in the 2020 short drama “Ancient Methods”, written and directed by Lexi Kirsch, and which also starred E. R. Fightmaster and Rekha Shankar. It follows two people who’ve fallen in love.

Tien’s debut TV series role was playing Ly in the 2017 episode “Lady Cha Cha” of the comedy “Easy”, created by Joe Swanberg, and which starred Elizabeth Reaser, Jane Adams and Michael Chernus. It follows a group of friends from Chicago, Illinois as they’re exploring culture, love and sex; the series aired from 2016 through 2019 and won one of its five award nominations.

In 2017 and 2018, she played Laura in four episodes of the comedy “Hot Date”, created by Emily Axford and Brian Murphy, who also starred in it; it follows several people as they’re searching for love and sex. The year 2019 saw Tien play Asian Aunt Viv in the episode “Behind the Charade” of the musical comedy “Sherman’s Showcase”, and Sheila Cholosternin in the 2020 episode “The Launch” of the comedy “Space Force”.

In 2021, she voiced Alix in the episode “Deb’s BBQ” of the animated action adventure “Q-Force”, created by Gabe Liedman, and which starred Patti Harrison, David Harbour and Gary Cole; it follows the lives of a group of LGBTQ superspies, and the series was nominated for two awards. Tien could then have been seen playing and voicing characters in an episode of the comedy “Work in Progress”, another comedy “South Side” and the animated action adventure “Star Trek: Lower Decks” (voice role).

In 2022 and 2023, she portrayed Ellen in all 30 episodes of the comedy “How I Met Your Father”, created by Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker, and which starred Hilary Duff, Christopher Lowell and Francia Raisa. Tien’s only other TV series role has been starring in all 16 episodes of the sports drama “In These Cleats”, which also starred Paige Nielsen and Lauren Walker, and follows the life of a female athlete.

Tien worked as a production consultant on seven episodes of the comedy series “Work in Progress” in 2019 and 2020, and wrote 10 episodes of the series, plus five episodes of the 2022 comedy series “The Book of Queer”.

Some of Tien’s recent talk-show appearances have been in “Entertainment Tonight”, “Hollywood First Look” and “eTalk Daily”.
