Who is Bruce Greenwood?

Stuart Bruce Greenwood was born in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Canada, on 12 August 1956 – his zodiac sign is Leo, and he holds Canadian nationality. He’s an actor and film producer, with more than 150 acting credits to his name, while he’s perhaps still known best for his portrayal of Pike in the 2009 action science fiction adventure movie “Star Trek”, directed by J. J. Abrams, and which starred Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg. It follows James T. Kirk as he’s trying to prevent a vengeful Romulan from destroying the Federation with his black holes, and the movie won 28 awards, including an Oscar for Best Achievement in Make-up, while it was nominated for 95 other awards.

Early life and education

Bruce was raised in Rouyn-Noranda alongside his younger sisters Kelly and Lynn Greenwood, by their father Hugh John Greenwood who was a geophysicist and who taught at Princeton University, and their mother Mary Sylvia (nee Ledingham) who was a nurse.

Bruce became interested in acting when he was around 17 years old, and then appeared in a play performed at his high school. He was also quite sporting during his teenage years, as he played both soccer and ice hockey.

He matriculated in 1974, and then enrolled at University of British Columbia, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy and economics in 1977.

Roles in TV series

Bruce made his debut TV series appearance in the 1977 episode “The Witness” of the adventure comedy “The Beachcombers”, but only gained recognition in 1986, when cast to play the supporting character Dr. Seth Griffin in the comedy drama “St. Elsewhere”. It was created by Joshua Brand and John Falsey, starred Ed Begle Jr., Howie Mandel and David Morse, and follows the lives of people working at Boston’s St. Eligius Hospital; the series aired from 1982 to 1988, and won 38 awards, including 13 Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 83 other awards.

What marked the ‘90s for Bruce was perhaps his portrayal of the lead character Thomas Veil in the mystery science fiction thriller “Nowhere Man”, created by Lawrence Hertzog, and which also starred Megan Gallagher and Marvin LaRoy Sanders. It follows a documentary photographer whose existence has seemingly been erased, while he’s now set on learning how this has happened; the series aired in 1995 and 1996 and was nominated for two awards, including a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music.

Bruce appeared in only three TV series in the 2000s: he played Mitch Yost in 10 episodes of the 2007 fantasy mystery drama “John from Cincinnati”, voiced Chiron in 14 episodes of the 2007 animated action adventure “Class of the Titans”, and played Richard Adderly in the episodes “Night One” and “Night Two” of the 2008 thriller mini-series “The Summit”.

Since 2018, Bruce’s been playing one of the lead characters Randolph Bell in the hit drama “The Resident”, created by Amy Holden Jones and Hayley Schore, and which also starred Matt Czuchry and Manish Dayal. It follows the people working at Chastain Memorial Hospital, and the series has been nominated for three awards.

Roles in movies

Bruce made his debut film appearance in the 1979 action mystery adventure “Bear Island”, and a couple of his following roles were in the 1982 action adventure thriller “First Blood”, the drama “Striker’s Mountain” and romantic drama “Peyton Place: The Next Generation” both in 1985.

He gained recognition with his portrayal of Stuart Ramsey in the 1992 action crime thriller “Passenger 57”, directed by Kevin Hooks, and which starred Wesley Snipes, Bruce Payne and Tom Sizemore. It follows the people flying on a passenger jet which has now been taken over by a group of terrorists. Some of Bruce’s other notable performances in the ‘90s were in the drama “Exotica”, and the  romantic mystery drama “Harlequin: Treacherous Beauties” both in 1994, and the 1999 mystery crime drama “Double Jeopardy”.

What marked the 2000s for him was perhaps his portrayal of Lawrence Robertson in the evergreen action science fiction mystery “I, Robot”, directed by Alex Proyas, and which starred Will Smith and Bridget Moynahan. Set in the year 2035, the movie follows a police officer who’s investigating a crime which might have been committed by a robot; it won one of the 17 awards for which it was nominated, including an Oscar nomination for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

Three of Bruce’s most recent film roles have been in 2019 in the fantasy horror drama “Doctor Sleep” and the drama “Lie Exposed”, and the 2020 animated action crime “Batman: Death in the Family” (voice role).

Other credits

Bruce received special thanks for the 2009 episode “Jamaica vs Thailand” of the sports series “COC Elite”, and for the 2011 short comedy film “The Biggest Schmucks in the World”.

He produced the 2003 romantic comedy movie “The Republic of Love”, and the 2011 fantasy mystery film “Donovan’s Echo”.

Bruce has made a guest appearance in many talk-shows, such as “Sidewalks Entertainment”, “Made in Hollywood” and “Celebrity Page”.

Bruce has won seven of the 28 awards for which he’s been nominated, including a 1995 Gemini Award for Best Guest Performance in a Series by an Actor for “Road to Avonlea”, a 2008 Film Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award for “I’m Not There” (shared with colleagues), and a 2009 Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Ensemble Cast, for his and his colleagues’ performance in “Star Trek”.

Love life and wife

Bruce hasn’t shared many details concerning his love life with his fans, but it’s still widely known that he’s today a married man, as well as a father of one. He met his non-celebrity American wife Susan Devlin in 1971, when he was only 15 years old, and they went on their first date a week later. Bruce and Susan eventually married in 1985, in a private ceremony attended by only the closest of their friends and family members; they have a son together, but the boy prefers to stay away from the media’s attention.

Bruce hasn’t mentioned any other women whom he’s perhaps been with, and as of August 2022, he’s married to Susan Devlin, and they have a son together.

Bruce is still physically highly active, and enjoys taking part in numerous outdoor activities. He often goes hiking and sailing, while he also enjoys skiing and skydiving; Bruce is an avid golf player, and has competed in a couple of celebrity tournaments.

He’s passionate about travelling, and has been all around Canada, as well as to more than 20 US states for both work and pleasure, while his dream travel destination is Rome, Italy.

Bruce’s a philanthropist, and has donated money to a couple of charities, mostly to those working with war veterans.

He has his own favorite actors, Al Pacino and Brad Pitt, while some of his favorite movies are the trilogy “The Godfather”, “Scent of a Woman” and “Fight Club”.
