Tom Berenger spent his early years in his hometown of Chicago, where he was raised with his sister named Susan in an Irish Catholic family, by his father who worked as a traveling salesman and printer for the Chicago Sun-Times, and his mother who was a housewife. Tom matriculated from Rich East High School in Park Forest, Illinois in 1967, then enrolled into the University of Missouri in Columbia, to study journalism, and graduated with a BA degree in 1971.

Tom gained enormous popularity in 1986, when he took the role of Staff Sergeant Bob Barnes in Oliver Stone’s critically acclaimed war film “Platoon”, in which he shared the screen with Willem Dafoe, Keith David, Johnny Depp and Charlie Sheen; it’s considered one of his most famed performance, and for which he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture, and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Thereafter, he continued to line up successes, by starring in the lead roles of Mike Keegan in Ridley Scott’s romantic thriller “Someone To Watch Over Me” (1987), Jonathan Knox in the buddy cop action “Shoot To Kill” (1988), and as Father Michael Pace in the thriller “Last Rites” (1988). It was followed by his portrayal of Jake Taylor in the 1989 sports comedy film “Major League”, which he would later reprise in its sequel in 1994.

His next outstanding role came in 1993, when he played the main character Thomas Beckett in Luis Llosa’s action “Sniper”, co-starring Billy Zane. The two portray US Marine Corps snipers, and the film follows their mission in Panama. He later reprised the role in its six direct-to-video sequels –  “Sniper 2” (2002), “Sniper 3” (2004), “Sniper: Legacy” (2014), “Sniper: Ultimate Kill” (2017), and “Sniper: Assassin’s End” (2020).

Also in 1993, he portrayed Jack Landsford in the erotic thriller “Sliver”, alongside William Baldwin and Sharon Stone, and was cast as Don Santry in two episodes of the NBC sitcom “Cheers”, for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. Thereafter, he played Theodore Roosevelt in the miniseries “Rough Riders” in 1997 which he co-produced, and in the following year starred as Pete Randle in the legal thriller “The Gingerbread Man”, opposite Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall.

Further Work

The new millennium started with his portrayal of Stan Gursky in the box office hit “Training Day” (2001), next to Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. In 2003, Tom starred in the role of Marshal Jared Stone in the USA Network crime fiction series “Peacemakers”; however, the series was cancelled after one season.

Four years later, he took the title role in the family film “The Christmas Miracle Of Jonathan Toomey”, which was directed by Bill Clark. From 2007 to 2008, he was cast as Bob ‘The Commander’ Garrett in the ABC soap opera “October Road”, then shared the screen with Busta Rhymes and Armand Assante in the action thriller “Breaking Point” (2009), before starring opposite Cillian Murphy and Leonardo DiCaprio in the Academy Award-winning sci-fi action “Inception” (2010).
