Tom gained enormous popularity in 1986, when he took the role of Staff Sergeant Bob Barnes in Oliver Stone’s critically acclaimed war film “Platoon”, in which he shared the screen with Willem Dafoe, Keith David, Johnny Depp and Charlie Sheen; it’s considered one of his most famed performance, and for which he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture, and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Thereafter, he continued to line up successes, by starring in the lead roles of Mike Keegan in Ridley Scott’s romantic thriller “Someone To Watch Over Me” (1987), Jonathan Knox in the buddy cop action “Shoot To Kill” (1988), and as Father Michael Pace in the thriller “Last Rites” (1988). Continued Success
His next outstanding role came in 1993, when he played the main character Thomas Beckett in Luis Llosa’s action “Sniper”, co-starring Billy Zane. The two portray US Marine Corps snipers, and the film follows their mission in Panama. He later reprised the role in its six direct-to-video sequels – “Sniper 2” (2002), “Sniper 3” (2004), “Sniper: Legacy” (2014), “Sniper: Ultimate Kill” (2017), and “Sniper: Assassin’s End” (2020).
Also in 1993, he portrayed Jack Landsford in the erotic thriller “Sliver”, alongside William Baldwin and Sharon Stone, and was cast as Don Santry in two episodes of the NBC sitcom “Cheers”, for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.
