Early life

Nicholas Lawrence “Nick” Wolfhard was born on 21 October 1997, in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. His father is Eric Wolfhard, who worked in indigenous law research, investigating land claims of Aboriginal Australians through his company, VLW Research. Nick’s mother, Mary Wolfhard (née Jolivet), was the assistant director at VLW Research, acted, and worked with the Dormouse Design children’s clothing brand.

He has a younger brother, Finn Michael Wolfhard, born on 23 December 2002 in Vancouver, who is an actor, musician, model, and filmmaker, who gained renown by portraying Mike Wheeler in 34 episodes of the “Stranger Things” Netflix series from 2016 to 2022. He also formed bands called Calpurnia and The Aubreys in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Nick revealed that he wanted to become a cartoon character from the ge of four, but his parents informed him that it was impossible. When that sunk in, Nick realized that he could lend his voice to animated movies and series characters. At six, Nick tried to understand the origin of Spider-Man by drawing the superhero’s friends, family members, and enemies. Nick also remembers a childhood anecdote: his father juggled eggs before him when he was eight. He accidentally threw one towards him, and it cracked on Nick’s tooth.

Nick earned nicknames “Nike” and “Nickie Nickie Nine Door” in his youth – the latter is a form of ‘nicky nicky nine doors,’ the informal term for doorbell ditching used in Australia and Canada. Moreover, Nick was a big fan of Japanese animated series and movies, known as anime, and listed American voice actor James Arnold Taylor as one of his earliest inspirations. Voice actor Ed Blaylock is another of his favorites.

Ancestry

According to EthniCelebs, Nick has one-quarter of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, and is of German, Welsh, Scandinavian, and Irish descent. His brother has said that ‘Wolfhard’ means ‘heart of the wolf’ in German, and that he and Nick have weird blood. Finn explained that their mother’s adoptive family had Canadian, British, Irish, and French roots – their biological grandmother only knew that she had Irish and Welsh ancestry.

After conducting genealogy investigations, their mother discovered that she was half-Jewish, while their father learned that he had German and Scandinavian roots despite believing that he was Jewish. After discovering that, their father converted to Catholicism when he was about 40.

Nick’s uncle is a fellow actor, Hadley Kay, born on 22 February 1973, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His paternal grandparents are Nora and Michael Richard Wolfhard. Nick’s adoptive maternal grandparents are Lawrence Charles LaTouche Jolivet and Patricia Mary “Trish” Lynch. He also has a distant but notable ancestor; his maternal great-great-aunt was Rita Jolivet, who was born on 25 September 1884 and died on 2 March 1971. She was a renowned British theatre and silent film actress in the 20th century.

Early education, source of career

It’s uncertain which high school Nick attended, although he most likely matriculated from a Catholic school, as did his younger brother. According to his Cheatsheet interview, he began acting in high school. Nick shared an anecdote from the day he matriculated from high school; his homeroom teacher ordered Church’s chicken for everyone in his class, and they watched a movie while eating.

Later that day, someone taped a picture of Shrek with a wide grin on the mirror in the bathroom for male students. Nick also admitted that he would return to his high school days to eat pizza sticks in his high school’s cafeteria.

According to Nick’s LinkedIn profile, he attended Corpus Christi College and St. Mark’s College at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver campus. He later perfected his craft at Vancouver College Drama, Instant Theatre Improv, On the Mic Training, and Shoreline Actors Academy, all in Vancouver.

Career

Nick made his acting debut in 2013, in the short movie “Aftermath” as Young James. His brother played Young Charles, so they debuted as film actors together. A year later, Nick lent his voice to Danny in the 2014 movie “Under Wraps” and then voiced Miyoshi for the English voiceover of the “World Trigger” anime series from 2014 to 2015. His first significant role was in 2017, when he voiced Alfred in the “Fire Emblem Heroes” video game.

Nick then lent his voice to Joker – Weeping Clown in the “Identity V” video game. Interestingly, according to Finn’s Vice interview, his brother has a fear of clowns, known as coulrophobia. Despite that, he appeared in the “It” 2017 movie, centered around a killer clown named Pennywise.

Nick appeared on-screen for the first time after six years by portraying Eric Vaughn in an episode of “The InBetween” television series. He returned to voice acting by playing Bliblie and Graham Nelly in the pilot of the “Smiling Friends” television series in April 2020. Nick told Cheatsheet that “The InBetween” made him love acting in front of the camera because the cast and crew were incredible to work with.

Starring in “TLKOE”

Nick voiced Jack Sullivan, the lead character, in the “TLKOE” pilot episode, which premiered on Netflix on 17 September 2019, based on the graphic novel of the same name by Max Brallier, published in 2015. The series follows a group of teenagers, Dirk, Quint, June, and Rover, who settle in a tree house during a monster apocalypse as the presumed last surviving humans.

Nick reportedly wrote lyrics for a few songs in the soundtrack. Additionally, there is a deeper meaning behind Jack telling Quint, voiced by Garland Whitt, to ‘never tell him the odds’ in the pilot. His character’s statement refers to the “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” 1980 movie, in which Han Solo told his robot, C-3PO, not to tell him the odds of navigating the asteroid field in a starcraft. It’s unclear if Nick suggested it as a tribute to voice actors in the “Star Wars” franchise; James Arnold Taylor voiced Obi-Wan Kenobi in movies and video games.

“TLKOE” premiered its second and third seasons in 2020, consisting of 10 episodes each. That year, the series won the Daytime Emmy Award in the Outstanding Specia Class Animated Program category. Nick was then nominated for Best Performance in an Animation Program or Series at the Leo Awards and was the UBCP/ACTRA Award nominee in the Best Voice Performance category. Netflix premiered the short movie “The Last Kids on Earth: Happy Apocalypse to You” in 2021, ending the franchise’s run. However, Max revealed that he was working on a live-action movie or series.

Plans

Work slowed during the COVID-19 pandemic, so Nick refocused on live-streaming content on his Twitch account, thewolfhard, on which he has over 88,400 followers. He started streaming in November 2016 and primarily played video games such as “Overwatch,” “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive,” “Gravity Rush 2,” and “Rocket League.” However, during the pandemic, he played “Call of Duty 4,” “DOOM Eternal,” “Animal Crossing,” and “Monster Hunter.”

Nick returned to acting in 2021, when he voiced Toto in the English version of the “Goodbye, Don Glees!” movie. Finally, he reprised his voice role as Alfred in the “Fire Emblem: Engage” video game in 2023. On 11 December 2023, Nick announced via Instagram that he would lend his voice to an undisclosed character in the “No Rest for the Wicked” game, which has no release date.

Social media

Since February 2016, Nick has been active on Instagram, a platform on which his profile, thewolfhard, has amassed over 440,000 followers. He primarily used it to share more about his life, including his pets, family, love of comic books, and video games.

Similarly, Nick has shared his feelings and opinions on his X account, @Nick__Wolfhard, with over 107,000 followers. For instance, he revealed that he was on the autism spectrum on 1 April 2023. He also admitted that he always keeps a kazoo in the drawer of his work desk, as he uses the musical instrument in some voice-acting roles. Nick also carries a soy sauce packet for unplanned restaurant visits.

Girlfriend

Nick has been dating an unnamed black-haired girl since 2016, and likely longer; some of his fans compared her appearance to actress Zendaya. Nick called her ‘the best person ever‘ and stated that she makes ‘an amazing chicken stir fry meal.’ Although he stopped posting about her after 2018, Nick mentioned her in several posts on his X account in 2023.
