Who is Dominic Cooper?

Dominic Edward Cooper was born in Greenwich, London, England, on 2 June 1978 – his zodiac sign is Gemini, and he holds British nationality. He’s an actor, film producer and a musician, who has appeared in more than 50 movies and TV series, while he’s perhaps still known best for his portrayal of the lead characters Uday Hussein and Latif Yahia, in the 2011 biographical thriller movie “The Devil’s Double”. It was directed by Lee Tamahori, also starred Ludivine Sagnier and Raad Rawi, and follows the life of Saddam Hussein and his family; the movie was nominated for four awards.

Early life and education

Dominic was raised alongside his brothers Nathan and Simon in Greenwich, by their father Brian Cooper who was an auctioneer, and their mother Julie (nee Heron) who was a teacher at a nursery school; Dominic also has a half-sister Emma, and a half-brother James.

He became interested in acting while attending John Ball Primary School; Dominic was a member of his school’s drama club, and could have been seen appearing in plays performed both at the school, and at a local theatre.

He then attended Thomas Tallis School, and was 17 years old when he launched his acting career, with his portrayal of Master of Ceremonies in the 1995 musical film “Cabaret”.

Dominic then stopped acting for the following six years, wanting to focus on his education. He matriculated in 1996, and enrolled at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in acting and film editing in 2000.

Roles in movies

In 2001, he was cast to play PC Merrifield in the drama “The Gentleman Thief”, while a couple of his following roles were in the critically acclaimed 2001 mystery horror thriller “From Hell”, which starred Johnny Depp and was nominated for 15 awards, the 2002 mystery thriller drama “Black Plague” and the  drama “The Final Curtain” also in 2002.

Dominic gained recognition in the following year with his portrayal of Boyfriend in the popular romantic musical comedy “I’ll Be There”, written and directed by Craig Ferguson, who also starred in it alongside Charlotte Church and Jemma Redgrave.

The movie follows a former pop star who has just discovered that he has a daughter. Most recently, in 2018 Dominic played Sky in the romantic musical comedy “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”, written and directed by Ol Parker, and which starred Lily James, Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep. The film follows Sophie who’s reopening Hotel Bella Donna, and was nominated for 12 awards.

He’s currently shooting for two upcoming movies, the thrillers “The Duchess of Malfi” and “Nightfall”.

Roles in TV series

Dominic made his debut TV series appearance in 2001, with his portrayal of Sidney Davidson in the fantasy horror mini-series “The Infinite Worlds of H. G. Wells”, and the same year saw him play Allington, in the critically acclaimed historical action mini-series “Band of Brothers”, which is rated to be one of the best series of all time.

It starred Scott Grimes, Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston, and follows a US army division during World War II; the mini-series won 40 awards, including six Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 26 other awards.

In 2004, Dominic was cast to play Danny Wood in the romantic comedy drama “Down to Earth”, and the following year saw him appear in the episode “The Hollow Men” of the crime mini-series “Jericho”.
