He played offensive lineman and linebacker for their team the Tigers, and was their captain for the 1966 season, when they became state champions, while Jack earned All-State honors with his 70 tackles; he received various other accolades in the same year, including All-Conference, All-Big Bend and Outstanding Lineman. Jack was also a basketball player during his teenage years, but eventually chose to focus solely on football.

Playing football at college

Jack matriculated in 1967, and then enrolled at University of Florida. He began playing for the University of Florida’s Gators in 1967, and was a varsity letterman for the following three years. He was a defensive end as a freshman, which was a big change for him as he had played linebacker at Monticello-Jefferson.

Jack continued playing defensive end as a sophomore, although he also played defensive tackle, and was in charge of kicking chores. For his 1969 season, he numbered 66 tackles and set a university’s record with his 14 sacks. Jack was named first-team All-American in 1970, as well as voted Southeastern Conference (SEC) Lineman of the Year, and it was believed that he would also win the Outland Trophy, but which eventually went to James R. Stillwagon. In 1972, Jack graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in finance.

Career as a professional Football Player

Jack was picked by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1971 NFL Draft as the 20th overall pick; he signed a three-year $105,000 contract with the Rams, which included a signing bonus of $30,000.

He started four games during his first season, and the magazine “Football Digest” named him All-Rookie. After Rams’ defensive end Deacon Jones was traded to the San Diego Chargers in 1972, Jack took over his position and was named to his first Pro Bowl in the following year, and again in 1974, ‘75, ‘76 and 1977. The United Press International named Jack NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1975, while the magazine “Pro Football Weekly” named him NFL Defensive Lineman of the Year. Jack played in the 1979 playoffs as well as in Super Bowl XIV with a fractured fibula, and it’s also known that his leg was injured when he played in the 1980 Pro Bowl; because of this, Jack was dubbed ‘John Wayne of football’. He set a personal record in 1979 with his 18 sacks, and continued playing until 27 August 1985, when he announced his retirement.

Career after football

Jack turned to other things after football, and went on to appear in a couple of movies, including the 1986 action drama “C. A. T. Squad”, and the 1988 sequel “C. A. T. Squad: Python Wolf”; he portrayed secret service agent John Sommers, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the latter. He also launched his career as a reporter as soon as he retired. Jack was a co-host of the ESPN show “NFL GameDay” in 1985 and 1986, while the following year saw him make regular appearances in ESPN shows “Star-Shot” and “Great Outdoors”. He became a radio analyst for the Rams in 1987, and held the job for the following four years. In 1992, Jack became a radio analyst for the Sacramento Surge, and then for the Sacramento Gold Miners in the following year. Between 2000 and 2003, he was a co-host of the show “Wal-Mart’s Great Outdoors”.
