Whibley is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer, probably best known to the world as the frontman of the Canadian punk-rock band Sum 41, but also for being the ex-husband of another Canadian pop-punk-rock star, Avril Lavigne.

Furthermore, Deryck alone collaborated with Simple Plan on the song “Ruin My Life”. Deryck Whibley Wiki: Age, Childhood, and Education
Deryck Jason Whibley was born on 21 March 1980, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the only child of Matt Whibley, a musician himself, and Michelle Whibley. However, his childhood wasn’t an easy one. His parents split, and he lived with his mother, moving often and living with his mother’s partners including Kevin Gordon, who became Deryck’s stepfather.
He found interest in music during his high school years at Exeter High School, which grew as he got older, and he learned to play guitar and other instruments, as well as to sing.

Career Beginnings
With fellow classmate Steve Jocz, a drummer, then vocalist Jon Marshall and bassist Richard Roy, Deryck founded the band Kaspir in 1996. At first, they were an NOFX cover band, and performed at local venues, then after a few gigs, they performed at the Supernova show on the 41st day of the summer vacation; this inspired Deryck and the rest to assume the name Sum 41.
As Sum 41, they got their manager and producer, Greg Nori, who was impressed by their high energy, but disliked the vocals, which caused Jon Marshall to be fired from the band.
Deryck assumed the vocals and rhythm guitar, and Dave Baksh joined as the lead guitarist, while there was also a change on bass, as Jason McCaslin took the role.
Their demo tape was sent to record labels, and in 1999, signed a deal with Island Records.
The band’s debut release, “Half Hour of Power”, an EP, came out on 27 June 2000, which eventually achieved platinum status in Canada.
Debut Album and Mainstream Success
Their debut album “All Killer No Filler” came out on 8 May 2001, and landed on the Billboard 200 chart at No. 13, and eventually achieved triple platinum status in Canada, and gold in the US. It spawned such hits as “Fat Lip” which topped the US Alternative chart, then “In Too Deep”, “Motivation” and “Handle This”.
Their follow-up, “Does This Look Infected”, although not as commercially successful as its predecessor, still achieved single platinum certification in Canada, it still spawned such hit singles as “Still Waiting”, “The Hell Song”, and “Over My Head”, which are listened to even today.
The band named their third album “Chuck” (2004) in honor of Charles ‘Chuck’ Pelletier, who had his say in saving the band from becoming casualties of the Civil War in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They traveled to this African country with War Child Canada, a charity organization, to get more details on the conflict, however, fighting broke out near the hotel they were staying in, and they were unable to leave until a UN peacekeeper, Charles, successfully summoned armored forces to rescue the hotel occupants.
The album reached No. 10 on the US Billboard 200 chart, made double platinum status in Canada, with hit singles such as “Pieces”, and “We’re All to Blame”.
After the initial success, the band went on an hiatus through 2005 and 2006, but returned even stronger with their first No. 1 album, “Underclass Hero”, which topped the Canadian Albums chart, and landed at No. 7 on the US Billboard 200.
Since then, the band has gone through several line-up changes, with Deryck being the only founding member still left – it currently consists of Dave Baksh, Jason McCaslin, Tom Thacker and Frank Zummo.
Since the release of “Underclass Hero”, the band has released three albums – “Screaming Bloody Murder” (2011), “13 Voices” (2016), and “Order in Decline” (2019), and have become known for global, long-running tours with over 300 shows a year.
Solo Career
In addition to his work with Sum 41, Deryck has worked as a producer, manager, and collaborator. He was a member of Bunk Rock Music, a production company through which he worked for No Warning.
During the hiatus in 2005 and 2006, Whibley worked with Tommy Lee on his album “Tommyland: The Ride”, and contributed to the “A Million in Prizes: The Anthology” with the punk-rock legend Iggy Pop.
To speak further of his accomplishments, Deryck produced albums of Jason McCaslin’s band, The Operation M.D, entitled “Permanent Me” (2007), and “Birds + Bee Stings” (2010).
He has worked with pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, stylized as 5SOS, on their EP “She’s Kinda Hot”, co-writing songs “Lost in Reality”, Broken Pieces”, and “Over and Out”.

He was friends with pop-punk star Avril Lavigne when she was just 17 years old; the two started dating when she was 19, and married in a wedding ceremony on 15 July 2006 at a private estate in Montecito, California, USA. The two performed together, and were a ‘power couple’ from the books. However, things turned, and Avril filed for divorce on 9 October 2009, finalized on 16 November 2010.
According to reports, Avril wanted to divorce when she realized that she’d married too young and needed her own life, wanting to explore the world without Deryck. Despite the divorce, the two remain close friends. They don’t have children.
In 2012, he started dating model Ariana Cooper, and the two married on 30 August 2015 in Los Angeles. Since then, they’ve welcomed a son, Lydon Igby, born on 1 March 2020.

Health Problems
He is known to be suffering from chronic back pain caused by numerous back injuries he’s sustained over the years. He has herniated a disc in his back multiple times, and has performed on stage against doctor’s advice. Deryck found a part-cure for his chronic pain in alcohol, which created a bigger problem, as his resulting alcohol addiction ran for years, and caused severe liver and kidney damage. However, since May 2014, Whibley has been sober.
