Uhuru is the son of the first post-independence president of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, and his fourth wife Ngina. He belongs to the Kikuyu, which is a Bantu ethnic group. He went to St Mary`s School located in Nairobi, and after matriculation enrolled at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts USA, where he studied political science, government, and economics. Following his graduation, Uhuru returned to his homeland, and started the Wilham Kenya Limited Company, through which he grew and exported agricultural products.
However, instead of a business career, as he got older Uhuru chose a political career, and in 1997 became chairman of the KANU party in his hometown. Also, the same year, he participated in the Kenyan general election for the Gatundu South Constituency, however, he lost to Moses Mwihia. Nevertheless, he continued with his political ambitions, and in 1999, became a part of the Kenya Tourism Board, a government parastatal. Two years later, Uhuru was appointed as Minister for Local Government, and then became one of the four national vice-chairmen of KANU.
In the next presidential elections in 2002, he lost to Mwai Kibaki with just 31% of the vote, but as a result was named as Leader of the Opposition. In 2005 he defeated Nicholas Biwott and became chairman of KANU, and led his party into collaboration with Liberal Democratic Party, forming the Orange Democratic Movement. However, he was overthrown by Biwott, and they awaited a court decision for quite some time, before the judge reinstated Uhuru as the chairman of KANU. In 2007, Uhuru fought for the presidential place with then President Mwai Kibaki, in a coalition named Party of National Unity (PNU), and the two won the election, with Kibaki remaining as president, while Uhuru became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister For Finance.
He held those positions until 2012, when he took over the National Alliance Party, and just a year later ran in the presidential elections, which he won with 50.51%, while his opponent Raila Odinga, from the Orange Democratic Movement won 43.7%. Since then, Uhuru has ruled Nigeria, which has only increased his net worth and popularity across the globe.
Kenyatta was accused of crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court, as a consequence of violence following the 2007 elections in Kenya, but the charges were eventually dropped in 2014, citing lack of or refusal to supply requested evidence by Kenya.
