Tony is of mixed ancestry; his father is Mexican, while his mother is of Irish and Native American descent. He went to Tulsa East Central High School, where he started playing football; during his high school career, Tony received All-State honors.
After matriculation, Tony enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, where he continued to play football. Unfortunately, the start of his career in college was troubled by health problems; first, he tore his ankle and then contracted mononucleosis, and so was red-shirted for the first season. However, he started playing the second year, and with limited playing time Tony made only 10 tackles.
Nevertheless, for the next season, Tony was moved to the nose guard position, and his numbers improved to the point where he received consensus All-American and first-team All-Conference honors.

The following season wasn’t quite the happy one, as he broke his left fibula and spent the majority of the season on the injured reserves list. 1987 season was shortened by a strike, and Tony played in nine games, which were enough for him to record 72 tackles. However, instead of improving, Tony had troubles playing professional football and asked for help from a professional psychologist before the start of 1988 season. He managed to return to the field before the season officially began, and he tied his rookie season numbers with 111 tackles. In 1989 he recorded one of his best seasons in NFL, having 152 tackles, which earned him second-team All-Pro naming, and was also selected as the Pro-Bowl alternate.
After the fantastic season, Tony wanted a new contract, however, he wasn’t given one, and soon enough disagreements with the coach and other stuff members began. This resulted in a trade in 1991 to the Dallas Cowboys.
