After a particularly negative review from Melody Maker magazine described their music as “a daft punky thrash”, Bangalter and Guy-Manuel got an idea for their band’s new name, so they formed Daft Punk in 1993. The band’s debut studio album “Homework” came out in 1997; it achieved gold status in the US, and platinum in both France and the UK. The release reached the No. 150 on US Billboard 200 and No. 8 on UK Albums charts, while the singles “Da Funk” and “Around the World” received Grammy Award nominations for Best Dance Recording in 1998 and 1999, respectively.
