Norman Gene Macdonald was born on 17 October 1959, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, the son of Percy Lloyd Macdonald and his wife Ferne. The middle son of his teacher-parents, he has an older brother Neil Macdonald, and a younger brother Leslie.
He went to Quebec High School and later to Gloucester High School in Ottawa, from where he matriculated two years early, and then enrolled at Carleton University in Ottawa to study mathematics, but dropped out before graduating.
He then briefly attended Algonquin College’s programs for journalism and broadcast television, and did a number of manual labor jobs before starting his career as a comedian.
Norm first began appearing in Ottawa comedy clubs, including Yuk Yuk among others. At first, he didn’t appreciate the comments he was receiving from audiences, and said that he’d never do such a thing again.
However, he was persuaded by the club’s owner, Howard Wagman, tor eturn. Eventually, his confidence was boosted, and in 1986 he performed at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.
Gradually, his career progressed, and he even got to perform in the “Late Night with David Letterman” show; David was enthralled with his comedic skills and wanted Norm to perform every week.

He successfully battled the disease for almost a decade, before he died from acute leukemia at a hospital in Pasadena, California, on 14 September 2021, at 61 years old.
