Norman Gene Macdonald was born on 17 October 1959, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, the son of Percy Lloyd Macdonald and his wife Ferne. The middle son of his teacher-parents, he has an older brother Neil Macdonald, and a younger brother Leslie.

He went to Quebec High School and later to Gloucester High School in Ottawa, from where he matriculated two years early, and then enrolled at Carleton University in Ottawa to study mathematics, but dropped out before graduating.

He then briefly attended Algonquin College’s programs for journalism and broadcast television, and did a number of manual labor jobs before starting his career as a comedian.

Norm first began appearing in Ottawa comedy clubs, including Yuk Yuk among others. At first, he didn’t appreciate the comments he was receiving from audiences, and said that he’d never do such a thing again.

However, he was persuaded by the club’s owner, Howard Wagman, tor eturn. Eventually, his confidence was boosted, and in 1986 he performed at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.

Gradually, his career progressed, and he even got to perform in the “Late Night with David Letterman” show; David was enthralled with his comedic skills and wanted Norm to perform every week.

However, his career went in a different direction, as he was hired as a writer on the TV series “Roseanne” (1992-1993), although after just one season, he quit and joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live” (SNL).

Norm was part of the popular show until 1998, during which time he performed impressions of such celebrities as Larry King, David Letterman, Burt Reynolds, Bob Dole, Quentin Tarantino, and many others.

After leaving SNL, Norm wrote and starred in the comedy film “Dirty Work”, co-starring Jack Warden and Artie Lange, and then launched his own “Norm Show”, which lasted for two seasons and 54 episodes. The series was about an ex-hockey player who is banned from hockey for life due to his gambling and tax evasion, and is turned into a social worker for the next five years as a community service for his wrongdoings.

The show was top-rated, and earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

From 2003 to 2004, he was Stan Hooper in the TV series “A Minute with Stan Hooper”, while in 2009, he starred as himself in the film “Funny People”.

Norm was active until his premature death, appearing in such projects as the comedy film “Jack and Jill” (2011) with Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes and Al Pacino in the lead roles, then in the TV series “Sunnyside” (2015), while from 2010 to 2018, he was Rusty Heck in the TV comedy series “The Middle”.

In the last couple of years, he was more focused on voice acting, and provided his voice to such characters as Pigeon in the animated series “Mike Tyson Mysteries” (2014-2020), then Yaphet in the animated series “The Orville” (2017-2019), and Grandpaws in the animated short film “Back Home Again” (2021).

He authored the book “Based on a True Story”, a heavily fictionalized version about his life.

Norm was diagnosed with leukemia in 2012, but didn’t talk about his health condition to the public, only revealing that he had leukemia to his close friends and family members, and he feared that it would jeopardize the way the world perceived him if he was to reveal his health problems. He successfully battled the disease for almost a decade, before he died from acute leukemia at a hospital in Pasadena, California, on 14 September 2021, at 61 years old.
