Who is Stephen Moyer?

Stephen John Emery was born in Brentwood, Essex, England, on 11 October 1969 – his zodiac sign is Libra, and he holds British nationality. He’s an actor, film producer and director, with more than 70 acting credits to his name, perhaps known best for his portrayal of the lead character Bill Compton in the mystery fantasy series “True Blood”, created by Alan Ball, and which also starred his wife Anna Paquin and Sam Trammell. It follows Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress who’s just learned about an entirely new and strange supernatural world, while vampire Bill Compton from Louisiana is guiding her through it; the series aired from 2008 to 2014 and won 39 awards, including a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, while it was nominated for 158 other awards.

Early life and education

Stephen was raised in Brentwood alongside his sister Amanda, by their parents, about whom not a lot is known because Stephen respects their privacy; it’s said that his father was the owner of his own small liquor shop, and that his mother was a housewife.

Stephen studied at the comprehensive school St Martin’s in Hutton, Essex and it was during his four years there that he became interested in acting; he was a member of the school’s drama club, and with it appeared in plays performed both at the school and a local theatre.

Stephen’s TV series debut was his portrayal of Philip Masefield in the 1993 comedy “Conjugal Rites”, and the remainder of the ‘90s saw him appear in an episode or two of various series, such as the historical crime drama “Mysteryl: Cadfael”, the mystery crime drama “A Touch of Frost”, and another mystery crime drama “Midsomer Murders”.

He starred as Michael Antonioni in the 2004 romantic comedy mini-series “NY-LON”, created by Simon Burke and Anya Camilleri, and which also starred Rashida Jones and Navin Chowdhry. It tells the story of a record store clerk from New York City and stock broker Michael from London who’ve fallen in love in England. Stephen played Mr. Brazendale in the 2007 drama mini-series “Lilies”, and in the same year starred as Sam in the romantic comedy mini-series “The Starter Wife”.

What marked the 2010s for him was probably his portrayal of the main character Reed Strucker in the action fantasy drama “The Gifted”, created by Matt Nix, and which also starred Amy Acker and Sean Teale. It follows humans and mutant humans as they’re learning to co-exist, the series aired from 2017 to 2019, and was nominated for two awards.

Stephen’s most recent role in a TV series has been his portrayal of Vern Lang in eight episodes of the 2020 thriller drama “Fortunate Son”.

Roles in movies

Stephen made his debut film appearance in the 1996 comedy drama “Lord of Misrule”, while a couple of his following roles were in the 1997 romantic adventure fantasy “Prince Valiant”, the 1998 comedy “Comic Act”, and the 2000 biographical drama “Quills”.

In 2001, Stephen played Kazik Rotem in the war drama “Uprising”, written and directed by Jon Avnet, and which starred Leelee Sobieski, Hank Azaria and David Schwimmer. It tells the story of the Jews’ 1943 uprising in the Warsaw ghetto, and the movie won six awards, including a Primetime Emmy, while it was nominated for 17 other awards. A couple of Stephen’s other notable performances in the decade were in the 2005 romantic musical comedy “Undiscovered”, the 2007 mystery crime drama “88 Minutes” and the 2008 thriller drama “Restraint”.

He portrayed John Fogleman in the critically acclaimed 2013 biographical crime drama “Devil’s Knot”, directed by Atom Egoyan, and which starred Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon and Alessandro Nivola. It follows three teenagers who’ve been accused of killing three children in a satanic ritual, and the movie was nominated for a San Sebastian International Film Festival Award for Best Film.

Three of Stephen’s most recent roles have been in the crime drama “Code of Silence” and the  short drama “For Every Good Invention” both in 2021, and the 2022 action thriller “Confession”.

Other credits

Stephen received special thanks for the 2012 short romantic comedy movie “Raincheck Romance”.

He has seven producing and four directing credits, with some of his productions being the 2012 horror movie “The Barrens”, the 2013 action thriller drama “Free Ride”, and the 2019 comedy series “Flack”.

Stephen’s made a guest appearance in numerous talk-shows, most recently in “Hollywood First Look Features”, “Celebrity Page” and “Sci-Fi Talk”.

Love life and marriage with Anna Paquin

Stephen was married to a non-celebrity British woman, whose name remains undisclosed, but who gave birth to their son Billy in 2000; it’s believed that the marriage lasted less than 10 years, and that their divorce was finalized in 2002.

Stephen was then in a long-term relationship with British journalist Lorien Haynes, and they have a daughter Lilac together.

He became engaged to New Zealand actress Anna Helene Paquin in August 2009, after two years of dating; they exchanged vows in a private ceremony in Malibu, California on 21 August 2010. They have fraternal twins together, Charlie and Poppy.
