He was raised in Columbus alongside his sister Erica Caldwell, by their father Alfonso Preston Moss and mother Teresa Rena Caldwell (nee Jones). He was only three years old when he became interested in rap music, and six when he started rapping under the name ‘Kid Gangsta’; Bow Wow was mostly into listening to N. W. A. during those years. He was also six when he performed in front of a crowd at a concert in Los Angeles; Snoop Dogg listened to him rapping and gave him his stage name ‘Lil’ Bow Wow’, which he eventually changed to Bow Wow.

His debut album “Beware of Dog” featured the hit single “Bounce with Me”, which showcased his impressive lyrical skills; the success of “Beware of Dog” established Bow Wow as one of the best young rappers.

In 2002, he released his second album “Doggy Bag”, which showed that Bow Wow was destined to succeed in the rap industry; the album featured collaborations with artists Jagged Edge and Jermaine Dupri, and the lead single “Take Ya Home” received positive reviews.

As Bow Wow matured, so did his music; he released the album “Unleashed” in 2003, and then removed ‘Lil’ from his stage name. This marked a significant step in his career, as he aimed to distance himself from the child star image and establish himself as a serious rapper; the album featured songs such as “Let’s Get Down” with Birdman, and “My Baby” featuring Jagged Edge.

Bow Wow released his new album “Wanted” in 2005; it featured collaboration with Ciara on the hit single “Like You”, which became a chart-topping success. His sixth studio album “The Price of Fame” was released in 2006, and explored themes of the challenges and pressures that come with fame and success. Despite receiving mixed reviews, it spawned several popular songs, including “Outta My System” featuring T-Pain and Johntá Austin.

Bow Wow continued to release music, including his album “New Jack City II” in 2009, and he then revealed that he was working on his new album “Underrated”; the album’s release kept being postponed every year, and still hasn’t been released to this day. Bow Wow revealed on 7 August 2016 that he would retire from rapping, and was working on releasing one final album before leaving the music industry, but the album hasn’t been released as of January 2024.
