Early life

Austin McKinley McBroom was born on 20 May 1992 in Los Angeles, California USA. He grew up in Palmdale, California. His parents, Michole and Allen, divorced in October 2011. Michole founded Lidstick Diaries, a clothing brand, while his father operates a non-profit camp for children with mental disorders called The Painted Turtle. Austin’s father remarried, so he has a stepmother named Erica.

Austin has a younger brother, Landon McBroom, who was born on 26 September 1996 in Los Angeles. He’s a fellow social media personality who ran a YouTube channel, THIS IS L&S, with his ex-girlfriend, Shyla “SimplyShyla” Walker.

Early education, source of career

Austin matriculated from Campbell Hall School in Studio City, Los Angeles, in 2011 – he played baseball as a shortstop, basketball as a guard, and football as a running back during his time there. Austin spent his freshman year at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan State, US, playing for the university’s Chippewas team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). For the following two seasons, Austin studied at Saint Louis University, Missouri, USA, and played in 66 games for its Billikens basketball team. In 2015, Austin enrolled into Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington State, played for the Eastern Washington Eagles, and graduated with a degree in communications.

Early romantic connections

Austin doesn’t remember his first kiss and assumes that it happened in a movie theater. He admitted to cheating on a girl he dated in high school, but felt that it was ‘lowkey’ because he thought that the relationship was over and that the girl knew it. Austin lost his virginity at 13. Austin only had a single one-night stand, which he regrets because he feels uncomfortable kissing and touching a girl whom he doesn’t have feelings for.

Alleged girlfriend, Jasmine Villegas

In early 2012, Famous Entertainment spotted Austin and singer Jasmine Marie “Jasmine V” Villegas at Disneyland, seemingly on a date. An old post on the Twitter (now X) platform from March 2013 suggested that they had broken up by then. Without specifying the name, Justine posted that ‘she thought that he loved her but was merely a fan and that guys want a relationship but have deeper motives.’ Austin only replied, ‘Damn, lol.’

Ex-girlfriend, Seiko Huffman

Austin revealed his relationship with the actress Seiko Huffman on Valentine’s Day in 2014. He posted via Twitter that he can’t see his Valentine today but that she knows how much she means to him. He added a face-throwing-a-kiss emoji, and tagged her.

Soon-to-be ex-wife Catherine Paiz

According to their YouTube interview with Power 106 Los Angeles, Austin and Catherine, a fitness model and social media personality, met in 2015 at a dinner party. Dolores Catherine Johnston Paiz was born on 24 August 1990 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Her parents are from Panamá, and she has two brothers, Ryan and Josh, and a younger sister, Valentina. Several years after birth, Catherine moved to Tampa, Florida, US, to live with her mother and later relocated to Miami, Florida. At 16, Catherine moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting and modeling. She graduated from Saint Louis University, which is likely where she first saw Austin in passing.

Their first date involved hiking to the top of a hill from which they could see the Hollywood sign. Austin was far more excited than she and said, ‘I love you,’ much earlier than Catherine was comfortable with. The couple’s first kiss was memorable because it happened in Catherine’s best friend’s bed while she was out of town. Consequently, Catherine felt that they were moving too quickly. She ignored him for a while, mainly due to prior convictions about staying single and trauma about her previous relationships ending unexpectedly.

Children

Austin and Catherine welcomed their first child, daughter Elle Lively McBroom, on 28 May 2016 in California. The couple created an Instagram profile under the handle @elle shortly after the birth, which has amassed over 4.1 million followers. Austin and Catherine secretly became engaged in August 2017 when Austin proposed to her by jumping out of a plane; they tied the knot in a casual ceremony in their backyard later that year. Still, they didn’t disclose that to their fans until 2020 because they wanted to make their public wedding distinctive, and organize a separate ceremony for friends and family.

The couple welcomed their second daughter, Alaïa Marie McBroom, on 17 October 2018 in California and created an Instagram account for her, @alaiamcbroom, two weeks later, which has accumulated over 2 million followers. On 20 June 2020, Austin and Catherine had their first-born son, Steel McBroom, and created an Instagram account, @steelmcbroom, which eventually accrued almost 900,000 followers.

Career

Austin and Catherine created their YouTube channel on 10 January 2016, which they initially named Catherine and Austin Vlogs. They quickly changed it to its current name when they realized that the first letters of their names and that of their daughter, who was on the way, spell ace, signifying a person who excels at something. Additionally, a subscriber told Austin that ace could be a synonym for unity, which the couple felt was ideal for a family channel. Their first video was a questions & answers (Q&A) video in which they revealed pet peeves about each other. Catherine disliked that he used too many paper towels for cleaning, and was a heavy sleeper. Austin was bothered that she refused his subtle invitations to cuddle while sleeping and sometimes yelled at him for waking her up.

The couple then uploaded pranks, vlogs, dares, and challenges, with and without their children. Austin and Catherine also surprised each other with new cars; the most expensive was Catherine’s $1.8 million black Bugatti, which Austin bought in September 2020. Moreover, to celebrate The ACE Family reaching 1 million subscribers in April 2017, they purchased a white Jeep Wrangler for one of their subscribers, Priscilla.

Austin and Catherine moved to a condominium in January 2017, then purchased a family home in early 2018. The ACE Family channel reached the 10 million subscriber milestone in July that year. Besides documenting their lives, the couple released several music videos, including “You’re My Ace” in September 2017, “Giddy Up” in November 2019, and “Only One” in March 2020.

Plans for their dream home

In September 2019, Austin and Catherine uploaded a video entitled “THE ACE FAMILY OFFICIAL HOUSE TOUR!!! **FINALLY**” They revealed that they had purchased a 2-acre or 0.8-hectare plot with two houses in Woodland Hills, California, and hired a contractor who promised to join the two existing buildings seamlessly. They aimed to build a $10 million mansion that spanned over 13,000sqft or 1,207m2. In February 2021, the couple put the previous home for sale.

Losing their mansion

Business Insider discovered in October 2021 that the bank had foreclosed on Austin and Catherine’s property, so the family faced eviction; after a failed public auction, the mansion was returned to the lenders. In December, Catherine and Austin revealed that the contractor allegedly used a fake license and lied about what was possible. Consequently, the two had no gas and thus no heat for two years, which made surviving two winters challenging.

Moreover, the couple had to pay $70,000 monthly towards their mortgage, yet struggled with legal matters; the state couldn’t issue a certificate of occupancy because the house failed inspections. They moved into a different home that December, while the bank sold the home to fellow YouTubers, the Stokes Twins, for $9.275 million, according to TMZ. In January 2023, the family suggested that they were moving to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which later proved to be clickbait.

Boxing

According to Tapology.com, Austin made his boxing debut on 12 June 2021 in an exhibition match against social media personality Bryce Hall. Bryce won in the third round with a mean right hook. Austin competed in his first professional match on 10 September 2022 against social media personality Ali Al-Fakhri, better known as AnEsonGib, but lost in the fourth round via a knockout. He asked for a rematch and fought AnEsonGib at the Kingpyn High Stakes Tournament on 22 April 2023 but lost again due to an injury. Austin was scheduled to improve his professional record on 15 July 2023 in a match against DJ producer, singer and music producer Tom Zanetti, but the bout was canceled.

Controversies

In January 2019, Austin took Elle to Spencer’s store, known for selling gag and novelty gifts, sex toys, and body jewelry. As if that wasn’t problematic enough, Austin purchased a lollipop in the shape of a male genitalia and then filmed his two-year-old licking it. He commented that ‘he was joking and that she should stay away from it.’

Additionally, according to social media personality and makeup artist Cole Carrigan, Austin allegedly had sexual intercourse with a young woman in Miami in 2020 against her consent, so cheated on his wife. Cole alleged that Keemstar, an American YouTuber known for covering drama, received $500,000 to stay quiet. That incident brought attention to Austin’s apparent creepy behavior, as he patted Elle’s butt in a live stream and mumbled something that sounded like an inappropriate comment. Elle attempted to push his hand away, confirming her discomfort.

Since 2021, Austin has been called out for abusing his audience’s trust. The most apparent example was the Ace Family Fest, which happened on 9 July 2022 in California, advertised as ‘Disneyland meets Coachella.’ According to Business Insider, the festival was chaotic: the tents had collapsed, the food was vastly overpriced, and the attendees had to wait in long queues in blistering heat to reach the stage.

Austin and Catherine created a giveaway in June 2023, promising a 2020 Tesla Model X, worth $65,000 at the time, to one lucky fan who completed a few simple steps. According to Dexerto, the couple reportedly handpicked the winner instead of doing a random draw, because they ‘weren’t sure if the random prizewinner would be a true fan.’

Separation

Austin and Catherine made, then canceled wedding plans in March 2018, before announcing the official wedding date, 9 September 2022, which was sadly canceled again. However, in the last video on the family channel, uploaded in June 2023 and entitled “ANSWERING ALL OF THE QUESTIONS,” the two revealed new plans for a wedding celebration. Austin and Catherine previously told fans that they would stop or reduce the number of uploads in 2023, because they felt that they had hit a plateau in their careers and wanted to focus on their family.

Thus, their fans were shocked when Catherine announced via Instagram on 11 January 2024 that she was leaving her marriage. She said that they decided to divorce amicably because their paths had shifted and created irreconcilable challenges. Catherine stated that she felt liberated, because she was committed to her family to the detriment of her happiness and goals for a while.

Austin wrote a similar Instagram post, calling their divorce ‘a leap of faith and the hardest decision of his life’, but stated that he was committed to letting go and moving on. They agreed to co-parent their three children, and make the divorce as drama-free as possible. Catherine stayed silent afterwards, but Dexerto reported that Austin started posting absurd pictures and videos to his Snapchat, and refused to stop even when his followers questioned his mental health.
