She is the daughter of Emmett J. Rice, a Cornell University economics professor, and the second black governor of the Federal Reserve System, and his wife Lois Rice, an education policy scholar. Of Jamaican ancestry, her parents divorced when she was ten years old and her mother later married Alfred Bradley Fitt.
