To begin with, he won the championship in the category average in USA, in 1983. Two years later he became junior world champion in the heavyweight division. In 1987, he stood on the podium at the Pan American Games, and in 1988, he won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Seoul.
Bowe turned professional in March 1989, and by the end of the year he had won 13 fights.
