Grossman started playing football at a young age, and originally played as a running back. He then became a quarterback when attending Bloomington High School South, and during his senior year, he helped the Panthers win over Homestead High School in the Indiana Class 5A state championship game. In 1998, he was named Indiana Player of the Year by USA Today, and received statewide honors.

He was given an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida and play for the Gators. He played his first game as a starter in 2000, and continued to solidify his position, being named Most Valuable Player of the SEC Championship Game, and was ranked third best in the NCAA Division I in terms of passer efficiency rating. During his sophomore season he led the nation in passing efficiency and yards per attempt, and would become a runner-up for the 2001 Heisman Trophy, and was a first-team All-American – he would win several trophies and awards in the same year. During his junior year, he became the captain of the team, and then declared for the NFL Draft.

He was selected during the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, but didn’t play much during his first few seasons mainly because of injuries that held him back. In 2005 he broke his ankle in a preseason game, but bounced back after his return to help the Bears get a playoff berth, however, they lost against the Carolina Panthers. In 2006, he started all 16 games of the season and it was a mix of amazing performances with lackluster ones. He drew criticism for his work ethic but was still supported by the coaching staff. He eventually proved his critics wrong when he helped the team win the NFC Championship leading to Super Bowl XLI. However, during the Super Bowl he made crucial mistakes that cost the team the game. He was given the Ed Block Courage Award during this season.

In 2007, he struggled once again with his performance, and was demoted because of it. He became an unrestricted free agent, but signed a one-year contract with the Bears with a $3 million base salary. He remained the back-up quarterback of the team for most of the season, and made spectacular performances despite being jeered by the fans. He then became a free agent in 2009, and signed with the Houston Texans for a one year contract, becoming the backup quarterback for that season. The following year, he signed with the Washington Redskins and would perform well – in 2011, he would become the starting quarterback of the team, helping the Redskins get a 3-1 start before getting benched again, but he would continue to play for the team until the 2013 season. The next season, he was signed by the Cleveland Browns, but was cut. He then declined their next offer, to spend time with his family. In 2015, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons but was eventually released.

For his personal life, it is known that Rex married Alison Miska in 2005 and they reside in Bloomington, Indiana. Outside of football, he enjoys watching movies and playing basketball. June 28 is Rex Grossman Day in Bloomington thanks to his various accomplishments.
