Randall Cunningham was raised with three older brothers, the youngest son of Samuel, a railroad worker, and Mabel Cunningham, a nurse. He went to Santa Barbara High School, from which he matriculated in 1981. He continued to play at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) for the UNLV Rebels, and won selection for the Football All-America Team two years in a row in 1983 and 1984. His professional career began in the 1985, when he was selected as the 37th pick overall from the NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.
