At a young age, Haley started helping her mother with bookkeeping as a part of the shop Exotica International. She attended Orangeburg Preparatory School, and after matriculating, would enroll at Clemson University to study accounting. After graduating, she started working as a part of the recycling company FCR Corporation, but she left the company to join her family in managing an upscale clothing firm; she would become the chief financial officer of Exotica International. In 1998, she was then named to become a part of the board of directors of Orangeburg County, and five years later, she became a part of the board of directors of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce. Her net worth was well established.

In 2004, Nikki would run for the South Carolina House of Representatives on a platform of education reform and property tax relief, and was elected unopposed, subsequently spending three terms in office. During this time she aimed to lower taxes, tighten immigration policy and restrict abortion. In 2009, she then decided to run for the Republican nomination for Governor of South Carolina, endorsed by noted names including Jenny Sanford and Mitt Romney. She would win the run-off vote to become governor, defeating Democrat Vincent Sheheen, just the third non-white person to be elected governor of a Southern State. Four Lieutenant Governors served under her, then in 2013 she sought a second term as governor, challenged once again by Vincent Sheheen, and was re-elected.

Haley was initially offered the position of Secretary of State under President Donald Trump, but declined. Instead, she would be nominated to become Ambassador to the United Nations in 2017, and after she was confirmed, resigned from her position as governor. She has made comments regarding the state of Russia, Syria, as well as the tensions with North Korea, representing the US in various UN decisions.

For her personal life, it is known that Nikki married Michael Haley, an officer the South Carolina Army National Guard, in 1996, and they have two children. She later converted to Christianity.
