The daughter of R&B singers O’Ryan and Jhene Aiko, Namiko is of very mixed ancestry, having Spanish, Dominican, Japanese, Native American, German-Jewish and African-American ancestry on her mother’s side and African-American from her father’s side. Jhene was 20 years old when she gave birth to Namiko; her parents were together from 2005 to 2008, and though never married, they have remained on good terms at least for their daughter’s benefit. Jhene’s career actually started in 2002, as a backup singer for the R&B boy band B2K, which consisted of Omarion, Raz B, Lil’ Fizz, and J-Boog. She was managed by Chris Stokes at the time, and worked with the band throughout their existence, while she was also the guest on their album “Pandemonium” with the song “Dog”.

In 2002 she released the music video for her single “NO L.O.V.E”, and began working on her debut studio album, however, it was never released because of growing tension between her and the Epic record label; she eventually focused on her education and was released from her contract. However, she returned to her musical aspirations in 2007, but was told to ‘sell’ herself by a manager, so decided to ‘sail’ herself, meaning that she wouldn’t collaborate with the corporation and become available for the masses. Instead, in 2011 she released the mixtape “Sailing Soul(s)” through her website, in collaboration with such stars as Kanye West, Drake, Miguel and others, and to promote the tape, performed with Miguel at one of his concerts.

She later signed a deal with ARTium Records, after meeting with record producer and vice president of A&R at Def Jam, Ernest Dion Wilson, better known as No I.D. Her debut release for ARTium was the EP “Sail Out”, released on 19 June 2013. Her debut full-length album was released on 9 September 2014, entitled “Souled Out”, which reached No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 chart, while it topped the US R&B/ Hip-Hop chart and achieved gold status. Since then, Jhene has released two albums, “Trip” on 22 September 2017, which wasn’t as successful as her debut release, however, she returned in 2020 with the hit album “Chilombo”, which peaked at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart, topped the Top R&B/ Hip-Hop albums chart, and eventually achieved platinum status.

She has collaborated with a number of musicians since acquiring world fame, including Big Sean, as the two released a collaborative album “Twenty88” in 2016. She has also worked with Childish Gambino on the song “Bed Peace”, then Jessie J and Rixton on the song “Sorry to Interrupt”, with Sean Paul on the song “Naked Truth”, and most recently she worked with Ty Dolla Sign and Mustard on the song “By Yourself”, among numerous other artists.

After her break up with O’Ryan, Jhene focused on raising her daughter and was single for some time. However, in 2014 she married record producer and audio engineer Oladipo Omishore, better known as Dot da Genius.

However, she filed for divorce in August 2016 and the divorce was finalized in October 2017.

She was dating Big Sean before her divorce, during which Jhene suffered a miscarriage, but the two broke up in December 2018, however, the’ve reconciled, and been together since March 2020.
