Gorder attended Minneapolis South High School, but spent a lot of time playing the violin and playing soccer. After matriculating, she went to Lewis & Clark College originally taking international affairs as a major, but eventually she changed her major to graphic design and found herself an internship at MTV, which she completed and was subsequently offered a job, relocating to New York. While there, she attended the School of Visual Arts and graduated with a BFA in design.
Prior to gaining fame as a designer, she was part of the series “Sex in the 90’s” mainly as a commentator. She then found work in the show “Trading Spaces”, becoming one of the original designers of the series.
