Michael Averett Lowell was born on 24 February 1974 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Carl and Beatriz Lowell, of Irish and Spanish ancestry. He is best known as a former Major League baseball player during a career spanning 1998 until 2010.

Mike attended Epiphany Catholic School in Miami, and then Christopher Columbus High School, where he was selected for the baseball team. However, he didn’t get enough playing time, which resulted in Lowell transferring to Coral Gables High School in his junior year. Mike went on to enroll into Florida International University, and played in the baseball team in the Valley Baseball League, in the collegiate summer baseball league, and in 1994 in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
