Matt started his journalistic career working for Tabloid.Net, writing alongside Tim Blair and Ken Layne. He then founded the Prague-based newspaper “Prognosis” in the 1990s. In 2006, he worked as a page editor for the “Los Angeles Times” for a year, but he started earning popularity in 2007, when he wrote about John McCain from a libertarian perspective. The work was entitled “McCain: The Myth of a Maverick” which discussed how the McCain presidency would have advanced a statist agenda, in which the state would control social and economic policy; during this time John McCain was the Republican presidential nominee, and according to reports, Matt had to make an FOIA request to get a copy of McCain’s college thesis. In 2008, he was then hired by the libertarian journal “Reason” as editor-in-chief, which he would serve for the next eight years. His net worth increased significantly thanks to this effort, as “Reason” is a monthly magazine published by the Reason Foundation and has a circulation of around 50,000, and was named one of the 50 best magazines twice times by the Chicago Tribune.

Welch reported on the UN sanctions against Iraq and its effects, receiving praise for his journalistic endeavors, and would eventually win the “Best Entertainment Review/Criticism/Column” from the 53rd Annual Southern California Journalism Awards, for his work entitled “Bailing-out Big Brother: Media Criticism goes from Rebelling against Media Oligarchs to Handing them a Lifeline”.

In 2011, he wrote “The Declaration of Independents: How Libertarian Politics Can Fix What’s Wrong with America” which he published alongside Nick Gillespie – the title is a pun on the US Declaration of Independence, and is a non-fiction book which discusses the nature and influence of libertarianism. It was published by PublicAffairs which is a part of the Perseus Book Group.

He’s also been invited regularly onto television shows, and served as a co-host of the political discussion show “The Independents” which aired on Fox Business Network, a libertarian- focused talk show which was also hosted by Kmele Foster and Lisa Kennedy Montgomery. All of these opportunities continued to build his net worth.

For his personal life, it is known that Matt is married to journalist Emmanuelle Richard and they have two children together.
